Success at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading

The San Saba Bands went to UIL Concert & Sight-Reading on April 14

The Sight-Reading portion gives students 7 minutes to silently finger & count a piece they have never seen, and then they must perform the piece in its entirety with minimal error. Sight-reading involves testing student’s knowledge of musical elements on the spot. This can be compared to TAKS testing in many ways. The rating system for UIL Concert & Sight-Reading is as follows: 1 (superior) 2 (excellent) 3 (average) 4 (below average) 5 (poor)

Our band program continues to grow in discipline, musicianship, and reputation through our performances and ratings. We have come a long way in just two years, and the growth potential is endless. Please come show your support for our band program on Monday May 16

th. The Concert portion of the contest involves playing three pieces of music which have been prepared over several months, and are performed on stage for three judges. The judges use a standardized rubric system, and all three judges’ scores make up a composite score. This section tests the bands ability to play selected pieces at a high quality level. th and received a composite rating of 2 (Excellent Rating) on stage, and a division 1 (Superior Rating) in sight-reading. This is the first time that any San Saba junior high band has received a division 1 in sight-reading. They improved from a division 3 in sight-reading last year. What an improvement! This is promising as the band program continues to grow.th as well and received a division 1 (Superior Rating) on stage for the second consecutive year in a row, and received a division 3 (Average Rating) in sight-reading. The sight-reading music was extremely difficult this year, and proved too much for our very young high school band (23 8th graders in a 50 piece band). Nevertheless, they showed pride and discipline throughout the process.th at the First Baptist Church in San Saba as they perform their spring concert.
