Another week without rain and thank goodness no fires in the county like those that are going on in other parts of Texas. The high winds have made it really hard to keep the fires under control that have been burning over the different parts of Texas. A warning to everyone to be extra careful and not burn anything outdoors. The burn ban is in effect and is there for a good reason.

Sylvia Stinnett and daughter Autumn made a trip to Lubbock over the weekend to visit Garrison, Brooke and the grand children. They left early Friday so

that they could get to Lubbock in time to surprise Gunter and eat lunch with him.

Amy Stewart and daughter Megan of Copperas Cove visited over the weekend with grandmother Jolene Lively and her mother Debbie January who is staying with Jolene.

Jolene Lively, Debbie January, Amy and Megan Stewart, Mebbie and Leon Eckhoff attended the Broyles reunion Saturday at the Cherokee school and enjoyed the fish dinner cooked by Jackie Brister. Mebbie reported that the attendance was down from what it was last year. Leon had pictures of himself and Mebbie swinging in the school swings and passed them around for everyone to view. It just goes to show you never get to old to be a "swinger."

The meeting at the Bend Community Meeting Thursday night was well attended by about forty people. Since Bend doesn’t have a postmaster, and according to the speaker there will not be one appointed. The post office may shut down in about a year. There were concerns about how the mail would be delivered when and if the post office closes. There are three different zip codes in the Bend area, some is San Saba 76877, some Bend 76824, and then Lometa 76853 which can be very confusing and will be a mess if and when the post officecloses. The 76877 and 76853 should be ok, but some that have a box at the post office with a Bend address are the ones that will have the problem. The Bend State Park and the Brister campgrounds have the Bend zip as do others. It will be a big problem for the ones who have advertisements out about their campground as the mailing address will all have to be changed, to what, no one knows. Money has been spent getting information about their business out to consumers and now will not know what will happen if and when the post office closes. Mail can be a nightmare when the address changes for some. There are some things that you get maybe once a year and if you do not alert them to the new address change you stand to lose out on receiving that piece of mail. Lets face it, it is hard to remember everything, so just pray that the post office doesn’t close. It will affect about forty people who have boxes at the office. There is also talk about going to a five-day delivery of your mail. The Post Master General and Congress in Washington will have the last word. Contact your congressman, but from the way they have been listening to the voters, good Luck!

The Bend Community meeting went off as scheduled with a light crowd attending, but those that did show up enjoyed the peach and strawberry ice cream and had a piece of Phil B McCoury’s coconut birthday cake. The entertainment didn’t happen, and Leon Eckhoff couldn’t be persuaded to sing which might have been for the best, so people sat and visited.

Happy birthday goes out to Tommy Ketchum who will celebrate a birthday April 22, to Jolene Lively who will celebrate a birthday April 23 and to Thaddous Scroggins whose birthday is April 25, to Walter Brister whose birthday is April 26.
