San Saba Cub Scouts attend Spring camping trip
Thursday, April 14, 2011 • Posted April 14, 2011

San Saba Cub Scout Pack 55 held its Spring camping trip 18-20 March 2011 at Barefoot Camp & RV Park.

I want to thank Jackie & Charlene Brister for their support of Cub Scouts. They always make our trips memorable and heavily discount park use fees. Their facilities are excellent and ensure a safe and pleasant camping trip. During the camp, the boys learned how to provide first aid, use a compass, make survival stoves and properly handle the US Flag. They also fished, made s'mores, and made stronger friendships. Gwen Rogers played her guitar during campfire ceremonies so we could sing campfire songs and taught the compass and map reading. The first aid was taught by Wymond and Mindy Kraft and all the adults helped while making the survival stoves. The stoves were made from used food cans saved from the school cafeteria. We did have a little set back when our can opener broke while removing the bottoms from the cans. The boys had to finish there stoves at home by removing the bottom. Jake Lackey worked hard to coordinate details and ensure our camp was successful. Mindy Kraft and Gwen Rogers both helped prepare meals and ensure the camp was kept orderly.

Speaking of orderly, I want to thank Sheriff Brown for his diligent efforts to keep the camp safe by ensuring the rules prominently posted at the entrance were followed by all. Since it was Spring break, some neighboring campers (not scouts) became loud and used foul language late into the night. This doesn't fit with scouting values or the Brister's posted rules. Sheriff Brown reportedly confiscated illegal paraphernalia and cautioned rowdy campers about disorderly conduct. The Brister's had also hired security personnel to safeguard campers and these off-duty law enforcement officers also monitored campsites to keep the weekend enjoyable for all.
