Four San Saba ladies, Jo Anne Hardy, Anita Miles, Sandee Hartley, and Jo Ann Snow attended the Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament at Delaware Springs Golf Course in Burnet, Texas on April 6, 7, and 8, 2011. In the past we have had as many as nine ladies attending. So many ladies asked about Hattie Rogers, as she is always there and all the women love Hattie. She stayed home this tournament to tend to George, but I’m happy to report he’s doing great from his recent surgery.
The ladies were surprised and delighted to win a new award called "Ace of Clubs". Five clubs volunteered to prepare raffle baskets as a money making project for the association and San Saba did their part. This award was given to the favorite basket by the number of chances the ladies choose to put their tickets in. Our basket was called "Nuts" and was filled with San Saba treasures and presented with full advertisement acknowledging "San Saba - The Pecan Capital of the World"!
This basket was made possible by the generosity of our ladies organization and San Saba businesses, that we are so aware of their continued support. So we extend a very special thanks to those who had a part in this coveted award:
San Saba Printing: Purple Visor and Purple Flip Flops (Janet Hoyt)
Sugar Bakers: Cookbook "Tea Time at the Masters" and playing cards
Embellishments: Ice Bucket with a Golf Motif and Golf Towel
Frank’s Watch Shop: Beautiful pecan wood writing pen and matching desk clock (Bobbie Churchill)
Oliver’s Pecans: Southern Pecan Coffee, Tangerine Marmalade, and Margarita Surprise Jelly
Millican Pecans: Package of Honey Roasted Pecans and Hot & Spicy Pecans
Doner Pecans: Pecan Honey Butter and Plain Honey (Jackie Doner)
The Rose Shop: Lemon Zest Candle
G & R Grocery: Jar of San Saba’s famous Bill's Seasonings
County Agent: "Championship Recipes From 53 Years of the San Saba County Pecan Food Show
San Saba River Golf Course: San Saba logo coozie, golf balls, and tees and our own ladies did their part:
Jo Anne and Bill Hardy picked out pecans from their very own trees and they were some of the best San Saba has to offer and that was the highlight of the gift basket, almost four pounds!
Jo Ann Snow gave a beautiful recipe book "In Praise of Pecans".
Sandee Hartley gave a pecan sheller.
Hattie Rogers and Anita Miles gave money to finish out the basket and pay for the basket, wrapping, and incidentals.
Thanks from the bottom of our hearts!
The ladies had a wonderful time as Delaware Springs is one of their favorite courses. And they all did well the first day and were in contention. Sandee Hartley even scored a birdie and Anita Miles was sitting first in her flight, but alas, only one came away a winner. That winner was Jo Anne Hardy! She kept it together and put two scores back to back to win first in the Eighth Flight. We were proud of Jo Anne! Perhaps her granddaughter, Shelby Hardy, inspired her as she just won first in a Houston tournament representing Sam Houston, her first collegiate win!
Anita Miles, Secretary of the Board, gave the invocation before the meal at the banquet and also gave a short poem that delighted the ladies, as she made fun of herself.
The ladies renewed old friendships and had a wonderful time golfing, playing cards, eating, and shopping. Now that we know we can’t score good two days in a row, it’s back to the real world and practice, practice, practice - and keep on "swinging!"
