The Lady Armadillos continue to make their mark on high school basketball. It was truly a wonderful season for these girls and for San Saba. Haylee Oliver was named the Standard-Times All-West Texas Super Team Most Valuable Player. Coach Tony Taylor was named as All-West Texas Super Team Coach of the Year. Please go to the online version of the San Angelo Standard Times and read the article, "All-West Texas Girls Basketball: Oliver Soars Amid Spotlight." The article reviews the action packed season the team experienced and highlights the all the players. This article was published on Saturday, April 2. With the excitement of the State Girls Basketball fresh on my mind as well as the great victories our teams have had in all sports this year, I am faced with filling out a survey for the University Interscholastic League (UIL). This survey will help guide the UIL in finding a way to help school districts cut the costs of athletic competition. The state budget crisis is a "well-rounded" crisis; what I mean by this is that no program will be spared from the budget ax! In order for all schools to compete fairly, the UIL will have to assist schools in cutting competition. The budget crisis seems to be taking away more then money, it is taking away a way of life that our parents and our students have come to expect. The value of sports and competition is not just found in the win and loss column. It is not only the players that experience the excitement and success. A winning season and the experience of success can permeate a school and create an environment in which success is expected. It is sad for me to think that because of this budget crisis, students in the next two years could possibly not have the kind of experiences that the students of 2010-2011 have enjoyed. The legislative session is quickly coming to a critical point. If you have not contacted your legislator to express your concern about the budget cuts, I encourage you to do so. For San Saba, you will need to contact Representative Harvey Hilderbran at (512) 463-0536 and Senator Troy Fraser at (512) 463-0124. Please let your opinion be known to these folks. As well, don’t forget to sign up for the "alerts" available from the website, and don’t miss the opportunity to sign up for the Parent Portal giving parents access to grades and attendance. Parents, let us know how we can help you the first day of school all the way until the last day of school!! If you have any question about this article or any other question about school happenings please contact me at 325/372-3144 or email me at lglaze@san-saba.net . We are San Saba! We are together!
