SSISD Possible Red Gym Ronovation
Thursday, March 31, 2011 • Posted March 31, 2011

The May 14, 2011 SSISD Bond Election Proposition will include the renovation of the Red Brick Gym to be used as a band hall. The renovations will include predominantly interior renovations to provide for acoustical treatment so that proper instruction can take place in multiple areas of the structure. As well, the stage area will be demoed out and made flush with the current floor area. This will provide for storage, ensemble and practice room space. Additionally, a director’s office area will be implemented in the programming. Space is required for instrument storage and uniform storage. The architectural rendition provides a visual of how a restroom and storage space could be placed on the front of the current Commerce Street entrance. This is simply a rendition of what the entrance could look like and not a final plan. Drainage from the current white gym parking lot can be addressed during the renovation in order to provide relief from the drainage that empties into the basement area. Discussion with the architect has included restoring the windows as well and a treatment for the roof. According to ISD records, the red brick gym was constructed in 1927. The square footage of the building is 7253.
