A Special Gift
Thursday, June 12, 2008 • Posted June 12, 2008

Every year we honor the senior class and their families with a meal and we give the seniors a Bible. We try to give them a study Bible that they will be able to use for years to come. A few years ago I had a young adult ask me if we still gave Bibles to the seniors. I assured him that we did. He received one in the early nineties. He then told me how much he appreciated that gift and that he and his wife read it every day. You just don’t know how much that means to have someone come back and say they appreciate this gift.

This year we had one young lady write a thank you and she said how much she “loves” her Bible that some of the members and the church gave her. I am hoping that many years later she will be able to say the same thing.

When you give a gift like this you never know if it is appreciated, if it will be used, or if it will just collect dust or be thrown out (I guess today you could sell it on ebay for a profit, if one wanted to). But as long as we can we will continue to give Bibles to the seniors.

There are many gifts in life that a person may receive. Children like to have toys when they are small. As they get older they begin to desire the more expensive electronic toys (ipods, laptops, mp3 players CELL PHONES, electronic games, etc.). And then the day comes that they want the car or truck so they can motivate anywhere they want to any time they want to. We try to give some of these gifts to our children if they need them or are responsible enough to care for them.

But the Bible is a very practical gift. In it you have a book that gives some of the best and accurate history you will ever find. It is a book that tells us of our origin (God) and why we are here (serve God and seek and save mankind). But this book also tells us of how we can attain salvation (a gift from God through the cross). I hope that you love the word of God and that you are spending time in that Word on a daily basis. This is the way to keep Satan at a distance and to stay in love with the Savior.

Go ahead. Read your Bible right now.
