Is it ironic that the Lenten season began the day after high school cheerleading tryouts? I think it is interesting to look for symbolism in the ordinary events of life. The interesting thing about the Lenten season is that it symbolizes for many Christians a focusing of their faith in the mix of a life that is highly complex and filled with many distractions. In schools the spring presents many distractions, or temptations, and it can be easy to lose focus. Bad weather days, sickness, extracurricular events, "spring fever" all take their toll. What exactly is spring fever? The actual definition as explained through the most trusted source, "The Internet" defines "spring fever" as "A feeling of restlessness, excitement, or laziness brought on by the coming of spring". This can happen for educators, students, and parents alike. There is literally something in the air when the temperature hits 70-80 for the first extended time that makes us yearn to put aside the indoor work and head outside. Hopefully spring break will help provide the needed relief for this ailment.

As of March 10

th, there are thirteen school days before 5th and 8th graders take the reading and math test for the first time this year. There are only twenty-nine school days until the entire district takes TAKS in all other areas: math, science, social studies. Is it interesting that this year the biggest week of TAKS testing comes the day after Easter? With the warming of weather extracurricular events will be in high gear and there will be many opportunities to lose focus. We must remain focused!
