"HOW BOUT THEM LADY DILLOS!!!!!!!!" It’s Monday morning and I’m writing this article and can you all believe that San Saba, America is going to the DRUM in Austin, Texas this Friday? What a great weekend for our town, fans, and our Lady Dillo program. Your Lady Dillos ventured way out west and captured two big fans to give our school its first Regional Championship in girls’ basketball. Your Lady Dillos weren’t just glad to be there, they went out there with a purpose and came back home with some hardware. Way to go ladies, you are to be commended and take a bow.
Our first round game was with Dimmitt and I felt pretty good with this one. They had a good point guard with the Bonilla kid but I had a feeling they wouldn’t be able to handle pressure the whole game and when we opened up the game with a 5-0 lead I knew we’d be okay. In the first half we hit five three pointers and went in with a 26-17 point lead. Their post kid (Myatt) gave us some trouble in the first half but we put the clamps on her in the third period. Our half court defense was outstanding for the rest of the game. I thought Jaena Edwards was outstanding in the lane, she jammed cutters and worked hard on defense and let the Bobbies know that "Hill Country" was in the house. Karlee Cromer, Johna Reavis and Haylee Oliver also gave us some great post defense as well. In the last quarter we spread the floor and Haylee Oliver gave them fits as their post kids had trouble guarding her in space. The three balls were working as Nessa hit 2, Ashley 1, and Haylee 3. The final score ended up 65-50 and we were onto the final round.
Coach Welch and I scouted the Hico/Spearman game and for most of the game I thought we were going to be playing Spearman but give Hico credit, they "mounted that pony called comeback" and kept their dream season alive as well. Hico and San Saba round 3- The Lady Tigers had beaten us both times in district and I knew it would be another battle. Brad Stegall does a great job with their program and his daughter Cassie is outstanding. Before the game started I kept thinking, "It’s hard to beat someone three times" and we were playing with great confidence so I knew we had a chance. Well, we hit our first roadblock so to speak of the playoffs. We didn’t
get out of the gate as fast as we had in previous games and our 3 balls weren’t working. We seemed to settle down a bit as Jaena Edwards hit two big threes to calm our nerves and we ended the first quarter up 14-10. The second quarter was a different story. The Stegall kid caught fire and scored 16 points by herself and the Lady Tigers ended the second quarter on top, 26-23. We regrouped at halftime and boy did we respond. The third quarter opened up with Hico hitting a three to put them up six but Haylee quickly answered with a three of her own and we battled back and forth for most of the third quarter. We decided to go "jump" Cassie to get the ball
out of her hands in the third and fourth quarters and our girls did a great job of jumping and rotating and getting steals. Nessa, Tarah, Joannah, Karlee, Johna, and Haylee did a good job of rotating up and applying the pressure. Jaeana secured the fort down low and before we knew it we had the lead. We pushed the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter and with about 1:16 left in the game I looked at
our awesome AD, Jeff Pannell, and said "I think we’re about to be going to Austin!!!" Tarah Crosby had about 4 great offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter that kept possessions alive and her steal and layup which put us up ten seemed to take the life out of Hico. The clock ran out and were Regional Champs and man what a feeling. Our great principal, Woody Martin, had given us a theme before the game and we "NO MORE BUBBLED" our way back to San Saba, America!!! I’m still getting goose bumps as I type this.
Now onto this weekend. To start off we had a mishap as the UIL first told us we’re playing Poth but someone goofed and we’re playing Brock. Yes, they’re good but you know what, everyone is good at this point. All I know is that no one expected us to be standing once the playoffs started and here we are. We’re hot, playing with confidence and anything can happen in a one game scenario. Don’t count us out baby!!!! Your Lady Dillos have the Heart of a Champion. All the pressure is on the other 3 teams- Poth, Winnsboro, and Brock. All I know is that we
have a pulse and we’re "STILL ALIVE"!!!!
Now for the SHOUTOUTS and man do I have quite a few!!!
