It is important to understand the facts about the status of the physical plant that is San Saba Elementary School. The students at San Saba Elementary School attend school in 7 different buildings. That means that the students in grades pre-kindergarten through 4th grade travel between 7 different buildings and cross two busy streets throughout their instructional day. These buildings include the cafeteria/office area, the nurse’s office, the K-1 wing, the 2nd grade wing, the 3rd and 4th grade wing, the PPCD building, and the red gym. Students must cross Storey Street which is barricaded, but not secure and 7th Street that is barricaded, but not secure. Security for the students of San Saba Elementary School is a major concern. Not only are students traveling between many buildings, many of the classrooms that house our youngest students are not under one roof and there is no barrier between the outside world and the classroom. On our other campuses, individuals cannot get to a classroom without going through a main building. At the elementary school, individuals can get to a classroom unnoticed and without checking in the campus office. This poses multiple concerns regarding the safety we can provide to the classrooms. The newest building on campus is the cafeteria/music room/office complex. This building was built in 1999 with a bond election that will be paid off in 2023. The PPCD room was built in 1997. The primary K/2nd grade wings was built in 1958 as was the nurse’s office. The red brick gym was built in 1927 and the 3rd/4th grade building was built in 1964. Please contact the campus principal, Kay Shackelford at 325/372-3019 to come on site to view these buildings.
