San Saba Soloist and Ensemble advance to State
Thursday, March 3, 2011 • Posted March 3, 2011

The San Saba Bands attended the Region UIL Solo & Ensemble at Howard Payne University in Brownwood on February 26th. This event is a competition where individual band members compete against a set standard on his/her individual instrument and/or in a small ensemble. At this event, students earn a rating from 1-5 (1 being superior).

Sixty one students (7

th-12th) competed in 41 solo entries and 11 ensemble entries, which is the most ever for San Saba ISD. Of the 52 entries signed up, 33 soloist and 7 ensembles received medals for earning a division 1 superior rating. This is also the most entries from San Saba ever to receive a superior rating at the annual Region UIL Solo & Ensemble contest.

Nick Tasker (alto sax), Ryan Guidroz (snare), Tanner Hawkins (trumpet), and Nickie Ortiz (flute) all memorized their respective class one solos and will advance to state. Also, a saxophone trio ensemble, including Nick Tasker, Joely Haverland, and 8

th grader Andrea Jiminez, will also advance to state. Many of these students have been practicing since August through very busy schedules to earn this honor. Texas State Solo and Ensemble competition will be in Pflugerville on Monday May 30th.

To earn a division 1 on any solo or ensemble entry at the region level takes a great amount of time and effort that is already stretched thin between the other activities these students participate in. However, to earn a chance to compete on the state level takes motivation and commitment that certainly warrants respect and praise. Please find a moment to congratulate these state-advancing band students for their continued dedication and success. We directors also want to say "THANK YOU" to the coaches, staff, and parents for supporting all the band students by allotting time for them to practice and compete.
