SSISD Board approves calling for bond election

The Board of Trustees of the San Saba ISD met on Monday, February 14th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President, Darrin Barker, called the meeting to order, established a quorum, noted that Board members Susie Nettleship and Kim Kirk were absent, and gave the invocation with everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

The Students for the month of February were:

Elementary, Westin Lackey and Abigail Meador; Middle School, John Welch and John Faught; High School, Haylee Oliver.

Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze reported the following:

1. The Spring sport events have been posted.

2. The next School Board meeting will be Thursday, March 10th at 6 p.m.

3. The local property value will be used because of the appeal.

4. A flag that flew over the state capital and a replica of an old school bell were obtained at the Texas School House Event.

5. Michael Bohensky, Woody Martin and Leigh Ann Glaze attended the Mid-winter Conference and gave Representative Hildebran petitions at a meeting with him.

6. The Lamar University Team Building/Board Training will be April 1st.

7. The Accountability Committee met and prepared a proposal.

8. Will go over the Snapshot Report information.

9. SSISD is applying for a $3,000 TASB Risk Management Grant that will be used for video surveyance on buses and automatic door locks at the campuses.

10. The school district qualified for the RUS Grant with Infonet and ESC XV that will be installed by the end of June.

The following agenda was approved:

a. The minutes of the Board meeting on January 12th.

b. Amendments to the 2010-2011 budget.

c. Payment of bills presented to the Board.

d. The Financial Report.

Assistant Superintendent, Michael Bohensky reported on the following: curriculum, evalutions, Cscope, Science, and looking at text books for next year. Bohensky attended the Harvard Principals Alumni meeting where Senator Florence Shapiro was the speaker.

Bohensky gave the following report for Elementary Principal, Kay Shackleford: enrollment of 303 plus 15 in Headstart; 95.9% attendance; evaluating students according to levels; Cscope meeting with parents had good attendance; the recent Book Fair at the library was very well attended; plans are being made to go to Austin for the UT Explorer Day on March 5th.

Middle School Principal, Vicki Key reported 193 students enrolled and 94.92% attendance; Open House will be February 28th; will be starting TACS March 1st; tutorials are in progress; next week starting Lab in Science; UIL recognition; an increase in learning; Technology workshop; Track meets start next week; Twirler tryouts will be after Spring Break; going over Snapshot data.

Woody Martin, High School Principal, attended the softball game tonight and reported a win; an enrollment of 201; 96.4% attendance; UIL’s and Tutorials.

Bohensky reported the following for Athletic Director, Jeff Pannell: gave basketbal statistics; powerlifting off to good start-eight ranked in state level; gave Llano tennis tournament results; softball started February 14th; track and baseball starts February 16th.

The Board took action on the following items:

A. Extended depository contract for funds of ISD’s under TEC Chapter 45, Subchapter G.

School District Depositories.

B. Determined impact of Paradigm Charter and Responsive Education Solutions Charger on SSISD enrollment to be detrimental.

C. School was cancelled for two days, one due to power outage that the board will apply for a waiver to TEA and the other day weather conditions. The make up days will be Saturday, March 26th and April 16th.

D. The Board presented the First Reading for Policy Update 89, affecting nine local policies.

E. Gave the First Reading for the Student Transfer Policy.

F. Approved an order calling a Bond Election; providing for the conduct and giving of notice of said election; and resolving other matters related thereto. (See Bond Election article on Page 2.)

Ron Greiner, a representative of Government Capitol, was available for information regarding the low interest bond and attended the Executive Session.

President Darrin Barker adjourned the meeting with a short break before the Executive Session.

At the Executive meeting the Board regretfully accepted the resignation of custodian, Hermina Paradez. Reviewed evaluations and extended contracts of Assistant Superintendent,Michael Bohensky; Athletic Director, Jeff Pannell; Technical Director, Milly Summy; Librarian, Deanne Cromer; School Nurse, Maria Cisneroz; Band Director, Brian Sours; High School Principal, Woody Martin; Middle School Prinicipal, Vicki Key; Elementary Principal, Kay Schackleford.
