In all areas of our lives we have rules that we must live by. Sometimes we resent these rules. At other times we are glad they are in place for us. If there were no rules anyone could do anything one wanted and it would be okay, with no harsh consequences.
Take, for instance, the rule that the laws of the land have stated about driving while drinking. If you are a drinker you may think this is a stupid rule. "After all," you think, "I can handle my liquor. I’m not going to hurt anyone." It is at just this moment that you will probably do more harm than good. I have talked with a number of people who thought this way only to hurt themselves and/or others. I personally like the rule that states you cannot drink and drive.
Whenever you play in or watch an organized game, there are rules followed there also. Would you like to play in a game where there were no rules? At the exact moment you may think you have won the game, someone changes the rules and now you have to start over. Not very much fun is it? We want to have guidelines set that we may know how we can win.
And think of the home. There must be rules there also. Children need to know what their limits are and it does not need to change whenever we feel like it. That is just confusing a child and keeping them from growing in a mature way.
Someone recently said of a certain rule that was given, "It’s a lame rule." That was her opinion. I personally believe it was a good rule that was intended to help her even if she did not like the rule. And if you don’t like one, instead of disobeying it, try to have someone see why you believe it is not a good rule. Maybe they will see your way of thinking and you can get it changed.
One thing needs to be mentioned, however. You can never change God’s rules or think they are "lame." You must obey His rules as He has given them. Are you?
