The month of May is just around the corner and it will be time to hold school board elections. Recently we spoke about the time and dedication given to our District by our school board of trustees. It is a job without monetary compensation, but one rich with rewards when we see our students, campuses, staff and District be successful.

What does the school board election calendar look like and what are the key dates? Thursday, January 13 was the first official day of election season. This date marked the first posting notice of the filing period dates for the upcoming May election. The next key dates are as follows: Saturday, February 12 is the first day to file for an application for a place on the ballot; Monday, March 14 is the deadline to file an application for a place on the ballot; and the last day for a political subdivision to call for a general election to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011 is March 14; Thursday, April 14 is the last day to register to vote for the Saturday, May 14 election; Monday, May 2 marks the first date to vote early in person and May 14 is the actual date of the election.

Serving on the school board is not an easy position. If you are considering making an application to run for the San Saba ISD school board of trustees, I encourage you to come by and visit with me or visit with our sitting trustees about the time commitment that is involved and the other duties of the office. Training hours, regular monthly meetings and special meetings, attendance at school events, and keeping up with happenings in state, regional and local education are some of the key requirements of the office.
