San Saba River Chapter Daughters of the Republic of Texas complete fall fundraiser
Thursday, December 30, 2010 • Posted December 30, 2010

The San Saba River Chapter Daughters of the Republic of Texas completed a Fall fundraising raffle for a 37" flat screen Sanyo TV during the festivities of Christmas on the Square in San Saba on December 11, 2010. The project was part of a state wide effort entitled "The Vision".

The Vision is for a new Republic of Texas Museum in Austin complete with a Texas Family History Center, Educational Viewing Theatre, Conference and Meeting Rooms, Museum Store, DRT Business Office, Climate Controlled Storage and a Children’s Interactive Museum.

The Daughters were challenged to raise $1,000 per chapter in order to make The Vision a reality. With over 100 chapters in Texas, your local chapter is one of the 20 who have currently given or pledged $1,000 or more. With the hard work of chapter members the raffle was a success with all expenses paid. The winner was Blaine Whittington, grandson of Malcolm and Beverly Underwood of San Saba.

The support of the project is needed for several reasons. The current DRT Headquarters is under an unattractive overpass in Austin in an originally commercial area not intended for museum goers. It is hard to find and has inadequate parking. The new property, located on San Marcos Street will provide a much needed more prominent facility. The Vision is that the new complex can provide the highest quality experiences for visitors of all ages seeking to learn about the fascinating history of Texas, provide more meeting spaces for educational conferences, nonprofit gatherings, social events and other public service activities. Plans included are to consolidate museum operations at one Austin location for more efficient DRT business operations, relocate to a beloved Austin historic site for a more rewarding visitor experience and enhance income opportunities that will help expand the educational activities of the DRT for the benefit of future generations, to provide research on Texas history and Texas families and to house important artifacts and records of Texas.
