December 12, 1985

Dale McBride, country western and gospel singer and a Lampasas native, will emcee the 2nd annual "Old Fashioned Christmas Caroling Party" hosted by Heart O' Texas Savings Association to be held in the high school cafetorium, Friday, December 20 at 6 PM.

Jennifer Wilder and Mitchell McCarty were crowned Little Mr. and Miss Pecan of San Saba. 36 contestants competed for the title - Jennifer is the daughter of Kathy Wilder and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Trenton Hamrick of San Saba. Mitchell is the son of Kay McCarty and Norris McCarty Jr. and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Mccarty Sr. of San Saba and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chumney of Hamilton.

One of the nation's most rapidly recognized water colorists, Jan Felts Mauldin, daughter of Dr. H.V. Felts of San Saba, exhibited her framed original watercolors and signed edition print Sunday, November 17th at a special showing during an Open House held at China 'n Things in New Braunfels.

Several from Richland attended the Garden Club tour of homes in San Saba Sunday. They were Bobby Adams, Ernestine Warren, Lola Fae Mask, Kay Farland, Jill McKinnerney, Mrs. Draper and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor.

December 17, 1970

Brig. General James H. "Tid" Watkins, native of San Saba, currently commander of Randolph AFB, was the guest speaker at the annual Football Banquet held Saturday, December 12th.

Sheriff Brantley Barker, who has been a peace officer for 20 years, received an "Advanced Certificate" from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, officially certified on December 9th.

During the month of November, 10,676,700 gallons of water was consumed in the City of San Saba, according to Lowell Heath, who is in charge of the plant. The average gallons used per day were 362,053 or approximately 121 gallons for each person.

Sheriff Brantley Barker investigated a burglary at Curry Spinks' Barbecue Place on South High Street Thursday morning, Dec. 10th. Several pounds of meat for barbecuing and a turkey, seasoned and wrapped for cooking, were taken from the freezer and several loaves of bread also were taken from the building.

December 11, 1930

W.R. Smith of the Sloan area, had the misfortune to break his right arm while cranking a car.

T.R. Christian, engineer at the Richland Springs Light Plant, is taking his vacation in a hunting trip in West Texas and New Mexico.

A.C. Easley, well known pecan grower of Waco, was among the out of town guests who attended the Pecan Growers Association here in San Saba on the weekend.

San Saba County has --- population 11,000; total assessed Valuation of $9,327, 810.60; Tax rate $1.29; Twenty-nine Rural Schools with modern buildings and equipment; Seven Rural Routes; 70 miles of hard surfaced highways - north and south and east and west; over 500 miles of living water streams, the fisherman's paradise; fine agricultural and grazing lands; produces all kinds of vegetables and fruits; leader in cattle; sheep and goat raising; produces more thin shell and well flavored pecans than in any county in the world - the home of E.E. Risien, the "Pecan Wizard"; fine quality of monu- mental and finishing marble; a healthy climate and hospitable people; and millions of dollars of undeveloped minerals waiting for development.
