November 6th marks the beginning of the general hunting season, and Hunters for the Hungry is working with Hibler Family Processing to accept hunters’ venison donations for Texans in need. Hunters for the Hungry allows hunters to give back to their community and provide a nutritious source of protein to food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other food assistance providers.

In Texas, one in six people struggle to afford food and our state has the second highest rate of food insecurity in the nation, according to the USDA. Hunters for the Hungry exists to combat hunger in Texas. Hunters donate their deer to participating meat processors and pay a reduced processing fee, the processors distribute the meat to area food assistance providers, and those agencies serve it to people in need.

Last year in San Saba County alone, hunters donated 547 pounds of venison through the program. That equals 2,188 servings for people in need. Statewide, hunters donated 167,840 pounds through 97 participating meat processors.
