The San Saba Lady Dillos have started off the season with a 1 and 1 record. We traveled to Brownwood for our first game of the year against a very talented Lady Lion team. Brownwood made the playoffs last year for the first time in the history of the school under new coach Heather Hohertz (a Priddy native). Brownwood had four starters back from their playoff team so I knew we would be facing a formidable opponent which would be good for us. They have three really good guards and a big, strong post kid inside. We ran a box and one on one of their guards and did a great job holding her to two points for the entire game. We rotated Danessa, Tarah, Karlee and Ashley on her and really frustrated her all night. This part of the gameplan worked perfectly for us, the negative of the
night was that we "couldn’t throw it in the ocean" from the perimeter. The Lady Lions ran a zone on us and we struggled against it all night. We got good looks we just
couldn’t knock down any shots. The score at halftime was
14-11 in favor of Brownwood but we came out in the third quarter and only scored 6 points. We continued to frustrate Brownwood but couldn’t capitalize on their mistakes. Haylee Oliver lead us in scoring with 12 points. As far as EFFORT, I couldn’t ask for anything more from this group. We just need to relax and hit open shots when they are there, we’re very capable, hopefully we were just a little tight to start the year which can be expected. For our second game of the year we played Mason this past Saturday night. We had a great first quarter to start the game and jumped on the Cowgirls in the first quarter building a 15-6 lead. We lead 30-23 at halftime and then had a tough third quarter only scoring 4 points. Mason gave us all we wanted and actually took the lead with about four minutes left in the game. The Caveness kid #20 hurt us from three point land all night. She hit
a 3 which gave them the lead but Danessa Vasquez came right back on our next possession and put us back in front and we never relinquished the lead. Haylee Oliver lead us with 21 points while Johna Reavis chipped in 11. Johna
had a big first quarter scoring 9 points in this stanza. We’ve played two quality opponents to start this year and this will only make us better down the stretch. We’ll probably face zone defenses all year so we just need to relax, execute, and hit shots. We hit them in practice, we just need to transfer that to the game. This Friday we host the HILL COUNTRY CLASSIC once again. We have 17 varsity teams entered and a 4 team JV division. I really am thankful that Mrs. Glaze and our schoolboard allow us to host this tourney. We’ve had several compliments over the years and are looking for a great event again this year. The field this year will be a bit different as there are some new faces. Several teams from our District are in the tourney. Teams entered are Early, Llano, Ingram, Goldthwaite, Bangs, Georgetown JV, Junction, Brady, Brownwood, Boerne, Dublin, Thorndale, Mason, Smithville, Coleman, Nueces Canyon, and San Saba. On the JV side we have San Saba, Mason, Brady, and Junction. On paper the favorite would be Brownwood if you ask me. Hopefully, we’ll be in the mix when the dust settles. There are several ranked teams coming and this should be as competitive a tournament as we’ve had since I’ve been here. We open the tourney with Nueces Canyon on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. If we win we’ll play on Friday at
1:00 in AA (this has changed from bracket in paper) and if
we lose we’ll play at 11:30 in White Gym. Come out and support the Lady Dillos and catch some hoops over the weekend. Several people will be visiting DilloLand so come check out the teams. Now I know that basketball season is in fullswing and I’m totally focused on getting the Lady Dillos back in the playoffs but just for a few moments I’d like to "tip
my hat to the Dillo Football team and Coach PARNELL (inside joke from me). How bout them DILLOS and the total TEAM effort last Friday night in Dripping Springs? All I know is that the Dillos were "laying the wood" to our foes
from Karnes City. Hats off to Coach Easterwood and the
"D" Squad for their stellar play last Friday and to all the coaches for their work this year!! You guys are to be commended. Let’s be LOUD and PROUD this Friday night in Pflugerville and cheer the Dillos on to victory. It dang sure wouldn’t hurt my feelings to eat turkey on Thursday and then go watch the Dillos play on Friday night!!! There’s nothing better than watching the grass turn brown when you’re playing November football. Remember Dillos, "It ain’t the SIZE of the DOG in the FIGHT, it’s the SIZE of the FIGHT in the DOG!!!!"
