Thursday, November 18, 2010 • Posted November 18, 2010

The San Saba Pierian Study Club met Thursday, November 11, 2010 in the home of Mrs. Kathleen Hawkins. Co-hostesses were Mrs. Barbara Gilger - Chair, Mrs. Anita Miles, Mrs. Cherry Kay Lange and Mrs. Dorothy Miller. Mrs. Hawkins had her home decorated for the season with a lovely fall arrangement as a centerpiece. Refreshments, using a patriotic theme for Veteran’s Day, were served as the group gathered. Mrs. Kathleen Hawkins, President, called the meeting to order and opened with everyone reciting the Club Collect.

The club was entertained by the talent and humor of special guest "Big" Lloyd Dalton, a vocalist/guitarist who has been "pick’n & grin’n" since the age of 10. His musical career began in 1944 when he played and sang in a gospel trio with his mom and dad.

Mr. Dalton has been a regular performer on the Llano, Mason and Marble Falls Hill Country Opry Shows and has made appearances on "The Louisiana Hayride," "You Can Be A Star" on the Nashville Network, "The Cowtown Hoedown" in Fort Worth, and was an annual performer for 7 years on the "Cowboy Symposium" in Ruidosa. He most recently appeared on "The Louisiana Jamboree" for a musical reunion show of performers from the original 1950-1960’s " Louisiana Hayride."

During the course of his musical career, "Big Lloyd" has played backup guitar in numerous country opry shows for Hank Locklin, Charlie Pride, Charlie Walker, Hank Snow, Slim Whitman, Tommy Duncan, David Houston, Webb Pierce, Patsy Cline, Lefty Frizzel, Mel Tillis, and Bill Anderson. In 1971, he appeared with Willie Nelson at "Big G’s" in Round Rock.

Mr. Dalton gives God the glory and praise for his talents. For the last 2 years he has been making special efforts to "pay back" the Lord for his many blessings by singing and playing in local area churches, retirement and nursing homes. He also plays at a variety of special events and celebrations.

Following the program, the club heard and voted on committee reports. The members drew names for the Angel Tree project. The members were reminded that Saturday 11-13-10 was the day for "Keep San Saba Beautiful" bake sale. Mrs. Polly Womack & Mrs. Anita Felts were approved for honorary membership.
