Where to turn
Thursday, November 18, 2010 • Posted November 18, 2010

The days of our lives are full of trouble. Job said it best when he said, "Man, who is born of woman, is short-lived and full of turmoil." (14:1 NASB) I know some of you reading these lines feel this way. Many of you have experienced problems and even now may be in the midst of troubling things.

For some people the economy causes them this trouble. It seems that at the end of the month there are more bills we owe than cash coming in. We grow concerned over the high unemployment (9.6%) and some wonder if they will be able to keep their jobs.

Others have medical problems they are dealing with. There may be a new illness that has attacked the body and has caused us grief. We are a society that is growing older. As we age there are new problems to be dealt with. Our pace slows down and we can’t move as quickly as we once could. Read Ecclesiastes 12:1-8 and hear Solomon describe what happens when we age.

For some the medical problems may be serious. Some are dealing with cancer, heart problems or other conditions. These are enormous and we wonder what will be the outcome.

There are some who have family problems. The marriage may not be exactly as it should be. There may be fighting and arguing that drives one mate away. Children may hear this fighting and wonder if mom and dad are going to divorce. They then have problems doing the things they should.

I could go on but you understand what I am saying. Every person reading this has problems they must deal with. Some of these are more intense than others, but real and troubling just the same. So, what do we do?

The Psalmist tells us, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Ps 46:1 NASB) The first thing any of us should do is to turn to God. "Well, if I do, will He make the problems go away?" I wish I could say "yes." I would like everyone to be free from trouble. But that isn’t realistic. I do know by turning to God I can let Him help me handle the problem I am facing at the moment. If I do not have Him I must try to handle this alone. Alone. God is waiting to help all of those who will come to Him. Take your cares and burdens to Him and let Him carry your load as you live day by day.
