This past Thursday, the JV Armadillo football team hosted the Ozona Lions on our home turf at Rogan Field. The game started off well as we kicked off to the Lions and our defense held them in check right away. When our offense took the field, we drove right down and scored to take an early lead. Keelan Verette ran in for the first touchdown. The two point conversion was good with a pass to the left from JT Mathis to Kolton Ellis on our swinging gate play. The Lions had the ball for a second time. They made a couple of first downs, but again the defense stood strong and forced another punt. The offense drove down for the second time and again found the end zone. Keelan Verette had another touchdown run. This time, JT Mathis ran the option to the right on our swinging gate play and ran the keeper in from three yards out. This made the score: Ozona-0, San Saba-16.
In the second quarter, the defense continued to play extremely well. Good plays by Nathan Amstead and Joe Lindsey controlled the Lion offense and kept getting the ball back for our team and our offense. The Dillos started another drive and Martin Cervantes broke free for a 25 yard run through the right side and went down on the 2 yard line. Cervantes got the call again and ran through the left side this time and crossed the goalline for the third score of the night. Moises Vega attempted the kick after, but came up short. The defense held once again and allowed the offense another chance to score with a little over a minute left on the clock. San Saba was able to advance the ball to the two yard line with a fourth and goal situation and only five seconds left to go. Keelan Verette looked to pass left for Kolton Ellis, but it was incomplete, leaving the halftime score Ozona-0, San Saba-22.
In the second half, the Dillos were focused on the task at hand. Keelan Verette broke free on a 60 yard run play behind great blocking from Aaron Perez, Nathan Amstead and Brian Rogers. Moises Vega was good on his kick and this made the score: Ozona-0, San Saba-29. The defense continued to play extremely well with great plays by Dusty Parum, Brian Rogers, and Mario Valdez. Once we got the ball back, Martin Cervantes also broke free with a 70 yard touchdown run through the right side of the line. Again, Moises Vega had a successful kick pushing the lead to 36-0. The defense put on a show in the fourth quarter. Wesley Gates recovered a fumble and other players like Juan Ortega, Moises Vega, and Kolton Ellis made play after play. As Ozona attempted to pass for some yards, Jordan Watson intercepted the pass at the Lion 45 yard line and went the distance for a defensive score. Once again, Moises Vega made the kick good. The defense continued to swarm till the end of the game as time ran out on the Lions. The final score was: Ozona-0, San Saba-43. This win made the Armadillo record 4-5 overall, and 3-1 in district play. Our final game of the season will be this Thursday, November 4, in the old stomping grounds of Junction, Texas at 6:00. We look forward to seeing you there and we ALL thank you for your support.
