Dillos skin Bluecats 48-6

The San Saba Armadillos defeated the Coleman Bluecats 48-6 last Friday night at Rogan Field to keep their district title chances alive. The win coupled with a loss by Sonora to the Ozona Lions keeps the title chances for four schools in doubt. The Harper Longhorns beat Junction to stay tied with San Saba and Sonora at 2-1 in district while Ozona went to 3-0. The games this week will help decide the district title.

Coleman received the opening kick from Diego Gonzalez. The ball went one yard into the end zone and was returned to the Bluecat 26. Coleman moved to near midfield before being forced to punt. The return put the ball on the Armadillo 29.

Early in the drive, running back Jack Whitten caught a short pass and made a 30-yard gain from it. He was hit as he went out of bounds and suffered a "stinger" in the back. He did not see any more action in the game. Alan Hale came in to take his place. The Dillos drove the ball for the score and Hale got the touchdown on a 2-yard run. Gonzalez kicked the PAT and San Saba led 7-0.

Coleman took over at the 20 after the touchback on the kickoff. The Cats moved the ball to the San Saba 36 before trying a short kick to pin the Armadillos deep near the goal line. The punt rolled into the end zone before a touchback and the Armadillos started at the 20.

Behind the running of Hale and Gary Gant, San Saba used 7 plays to score. Gant got the honors on a 3-yard run. Gonzalez made the score 14-0 early in the second quarter.

On the first play after another Gonzalez touchback, Tucker Cromer sacked Bluecat quarterback Anthony Thomas forcing a fumble that San Saba recovered at the 14 yard line.

Three plays later, Gant scored again from 2 yards away. The PAT went wide to the right leaving the score 20-0. It was only the second PAT Diego Gonzalez has missed this season. He is now 28-30 on PATs.

Zack Davis took an inside handoff on first down and scored from 18 yards. The PAT made the score 27-7.

Coleman moved the ball down the field. The defense halted the drive by stopping the Cats on 4

A 32-yard pass and run from Ryan Pannell to Gary Gant highlighted the next drive for San Saba. Perry caught a pass from Pannell for a 19-yard score to cap the drive. The score board showed 34-0 with 1:52 left in the half.

Coleman ran out the clock to end the half.

Coleman soon punted the ball to San Saba. The Bluecat defense held and Max Palacio punted the ball to the Bluecat 7 yard line.

Anthony Thomas tried to drive the Cats but Sean Argote ended the attempt with an interception at the Coleman 42.

The Dillos punted the ball again with Coleman starting deep in their own territory.

The Bluecats ran 8 plays before scoring on a 23-yard pass from Thomas to Reid Needham. The PAT attempt failed and the score was 41-6 late in the 3

After the Bluecat kick, San Saba started at the 26 yard line. Alan Hale got around the left end and out-ran the Coleman defense for a 74 yard score. The play was called back because of holding at the 35, however. Later in the drive, Hale got loose again on the 26-yard run to put the ball deep in Coleman country. Zack Davis scored for the second time in the game on a 10-yard run. Diego Gonzalez made the score 48-6 with his PAT.

The teams traded punts and Coleman turned the ball over on downs before San Saba ran the final 2:36 to end the game and the 48-6 victory.

Alan Hale led the ground game with 206 yards and 2 scores on 17 carries. Gary Gant added 81 yards and 2 scores, Sean Argote got 29 yards on 7 carries and Zack Davis totaled 28 yards on his 2 touchdown runs. Gant, Clayton Perry and Jack Whitten had one catch each.

This week, Coleman travels to Junction, 2-1 Harper travels to 2-1 Sonora and 2-1 San Saba makes their longest road trip for a district game at the 3-0 Ozona Lions. The playoff picture should be clearer after these games. Come out and support the team in Ozona at 7:30.
