Pierian Study Club holds October meeting
Thursday, October 21, 2010 • Posted October 21, 2010

The San Saba Pierian Study Club met Thursday, October 10, 2010 in the home of Mrs. Debbie Shahan. Co-hostesses were Mrs. Millie Burnham – Chair, Mrs. Becky Whitley, Mrs. Louise Williams and Mrs. Paula Barrier, home recovering from surgery. Mrs. Shahan had her home decorated for the season with a lovely fall arrangement as a centerpiece. Pineapple-orange cake and hot mulled cider were served as the group convened. Mrs. Kathleen Hawkins, President, called the meeting to order and opened with everyone reciting the club collect.

Special guest for the meeting was Mr. Stephen Goacher, an extremely talented musician who is accomplished on six woodwind instruments. A born again Christian, he has taken his music and story of personal victory through God’s love, mercy and grace to congregations, campus chapels, denominational conferences, church revivals and prison ministries. Steve says that many of his opportunities came because he was prepared, always practicing. Now he prepares for his greatest performance – before the living God. After a reading from Revelations, Steve gave a moving recital of "Holy, Holy, Holy" performed on the flute.

Mr. Goacher began study of the saxophone at the age of 13. He received his Bachelor degree at UCLA. The experience taught him that he had a talent for playing different instruments well, which helped cast his direction in life. He received the first Master of Music in Woodwind Performance granted at Texas Christian University, adding the flute, oboe, and bassoon to his instruments. Later, he was the first doctoral candidate at Indiana University permitted to perform multiple instrument recitals. At age 23, he was appointed to the faculty of Stephen F. Austin State University. In his career he has also served on the faculties of Kansas State University, Northern Kentucky University, and Howard Payne University. As a classical musician, Steve was featured soloist on 6 woodwind instruments in Aspen, Colorado with the Fort Collins Wind Symphony before the 48th annual convention of the American School Bandmasters Association. He was featured on 5 different woodwind instruments as lecturer and recitalist before the North American Saxophone Alliance. Steve recorded a CD of the music of George Gershwin with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and also performed in Carnegie Hall as an adjunct member of the orchestra. He also recorded an album of chamber music with the Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Quartet in New York City. As a "pops" musician, Steve has played with The Temptations, Henry Mancini, Bob Hope, Julie Andrews, Lena Horne, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, and the touring Broadway Orchestras of The King and I with Yul Brenner, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Will Rogers Follies, Grand Hotel, and Guys and Dolls. Steve uses his talent as part of his ministry to bring his audiences closer to God.

Following the program, the club voted to participate in "Keep San Saba Beautiful" through donations and/or bringing cakes, etc. to the fundraising bake sale. It was announced that Mrs. Linda Sloan was accepted as the newest member, and Mrs. Zolly Jones’ request to become an associate member was approved.
