Armadillos Enjoy Open Week
Thursday, October 7, 2010 • Posted October 7, 2010

The San Saba Armadillos had the open week last week. A lot of the players and coaches traveled to Harper to watch the Longhorns play Kenedy. Harper won the game easily. The only other district team in action was the Ozona Lions, who defeated the Reagan County Owls.

As district play begins this week, the overall standings are Sonora 5-0, Harper 4-1, Ozona 3-2, Junction 2-3, San Saba 1-4 and Coleman has yet to win a game. Junction goes to Sonora, Coleman goes to Ozona and Harper comes to Rogan Field for the Armadillos homecoming.

The open week means it is time to look at the season to date. Jack Whitten leads the team in rushing with 511 yards on 81 carries and 6 touchdowns. Gary Gant has 67 carries for 295 yards but has yet to find the end zone. Alan Hale has scored twice on 27 rushes for 127 yards. Tucker Cromer has the Armadillos other rushing touchdown. The team has totaled 984 yards and 9 scores on 218 attempts.

Luke Cox leads the receivers with 8 grabs for 151 yards and a score. Clayton Perry has the other receiving touchdown with his 42 yards on 3 catches. Whitten also has 3 receptions. Quarterback Ryan Pannell has completed 19 passes for 317 yards and 2 scores.

Max Palacio has had a good year punting so far and kicker Diego Gonzalez has made 10-11 PATs and a 39-yard field goal. Gonzalez has made 68 of 75 PATs at San Saba.

The offensive line of Dominic Rosales, Wil Sloan, Tanner Weyerts, Cody Herd, Diego Montoya, Russton Ellis, Michael McKinnerney and Russell Lowe have given the runners some good holes to go through.

The front seven on defense have made it tough on opposing runners all year. Linemen Sloan, Rosales, Montoya, Herd, Weyerts, Palacio and McKinnerney support linebackers Cromer, Whitten, Isaac Jimenez, Lowe, Alex Cervantes, Hale, Zach Davis, Ellis. Jason Wells and Conner Arrington have played but are currently hurt.

Gant, Gonzalez, Perry, Pannell, Miguel Flores, Sean Argote and Luke Cox provide pass defense.

The All-time Armadillo football is taken shape but not complete. It is hard to limit the team to 4 running backs and which to choose. There is 1 slot open. Also needed are offensive linemen, receivers, defensive linemen, safeties and corners.
