8th Grade Dillos battle Goldthwaite, lose 22-16

The San Saba 8th grade Dillos put up a good fight but came up short in Goldthwaite last Thursday night by a score of 22-16. Goldthwaite kicked to San Saba to begin the game. Will Cooley returned the kick 10 yards for the Dillos. Gabe Zimmer was the workhorse for the Dillos. Zimmer ran for 9 and 7 yards. The Dillos fumbled but recovered. Zimmer ran for 7, the Dillos overcame a holding penalty. Zimmer ran for 15, 10, 8, 8, 7, 2 and 5. With 1st and goal Zimmer ran for 4 yards and a Dillo touchdown. Good blocking on the drive by Ridge Smith, Joseph Messey, Caleob Hardmon, Emilieno Zapata, Bryon Riggs, Drew Daniel, Luis Macias, Jose Lopez. Joel Franco and Garrett Welch opened big holes in the Eagle defense. The PAT failed, 6-0 Dillos. San Saba's Jose Lopez kicked to Goldthwaite. On the first play, Goldthwaite broke for a 45 yard touchdown. The PAT failed 6-6. Goldthwaite kicked to San Saba. Zimmer ran for 4, 1, 5, 15 and 17 yards as the quarter ended.

The second quarter found the Dillos deep in Eagle territory only to fumble at the Eagle 20 yard line. Emiliano Zapata sacked the Eagle quarterback. Will Cooley came up with a big defensive play. Jesse Franco had a big stop and a 3 yard long pass play. Saul Cervantes, Juan Gonzales, Jessie Franco, Luis Macias, Fernando Rocha, Bryan Riggs, Caleob Hardman and Cristian Guerrero played tough defense. Goldthwaite punted. Gabe Zimmer ran for 6, 15, 4 and 25 yards. Will Cooley gained 5 and Zimmer added 2 more. A pass from Welch to Cooley fell incomplete in the end zone. Goldthwaite intercepted a Dillo pass at the goal line and returned it to San Sabs's 30 yard line. Goldthwaite scored on a 30 yard pass. The PAT was good. 14-6, Eagles at halftime.

San Saba kicked to Goldthwaite to begin the second half. Goldthwaite ran one play for 2 yards. The next play, Goldthwaite scored from 50 yards out. The PAT was good, 22-6 Eagles.

Goldthwaite kicked to San Saba. Zimmer ran for 4, 6, and 4 yards. Will Cooley got 4, Zimmer 10, then 1. Cooley broke for a 35 yard touchdown that was called back on a penalty. Zimmer passed to Will Cooley for 25 yards. Zimmer ran for 1, 4 and then added a 4 yard touchdown. Will Cooley added the PAT 22-14, Eagles.

Good blocking by Garrett Welch, Emiliano Zapata, Jose Lopez, Cristain Guerrero, Caleob Hardman, Ricky Villa, Luis Macias, Juan Gonzales and Joseph Messey , Saul Cervantes sustained the drive.

San Saba kicked to Goldthwaite as the 3rd quarter ended. The Dillo defense of Garrett Welch, Joel Franco, Jose Lopez, Will Cooley, Juan Gonzales, Jessie Franco, Luis Macias, Fernando Rocha, Emiliano Zapata, Benito Martinez and Caelob Hardman force a Goldthwaite punt. Zimmer ran for 3, 8, 8, 9, 1, 20 2, 5 and 3 yards before fumbling at the Goldthwaite 20 yard line. Goldthwaite fumbled it right back on the next play. Zimmer ran for 3 and 3 more before the Dillos lost yards the next 2 plays and gave up the ball. The Dillo defense held. Goldthwaite attempted to punt. Pressure by the Dillo defense forced a hard snap resulting in a safety, 22-16, Eagles with 38 seconds to play. The Eagles kicked to San Saba. On the first play, Zimmer scampered 35 yards to the Goldthwaite 4 yard line. Zimmer gained one more as the game ended. 22-16, Goldthwaite. It was a thriller. Gabe Zimmer had 351 yards rushing thanks to the offensive line, a good hard running. The 8th grade Dillos open District play against Harper here Thursday night.
