Vera Payne Baker began her journey to Heaven on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at the age of 81 to be with her Lord, who she loved with all her heart, soul, mind and strength. Born March 24, 1929 in Dallas, Vera married Pat Jim Baker, Sr. in Houston on June 1, 1946 and it lasted 54 years until his death on Aug 11, 2000. Vera is also preceded by their son, Jim Baker on Aug 31, 2009; her parents, Wayne and Voyzie Payne; and one sister, Norma Willis.

Vera is survived by her daughter Judy Martin and husband Al of San Antonio and their son Neil of Austin. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Lee Thorp and husband Bob of Berryville, AR.; and Selma Caskey and husband Roy of Clarksville, TN.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Northeast Baptist Church in San Antonio was like a second home to Vera and she truly loved being there every chance possible. Her joy for helping other people included making sleeping bags for the homeless, lap blankets for nursing homes and clothes for hospital preemies. A good artist and poet, Vera led a very active life, which included being a leader for Brownie Scouts, Cub Scouts, 4-H, Rainbow Girls and Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Vera worked as a seamstress in San Saba, TX. for 12 years and then retired from the DPS in Austin after 19 years. She often said that her middle name was "Go" because she loved to travel and did so extensively. Vera’s twinkling blue eyes and quick smile will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She left behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends.
