JV Armadillos claim first win of the season
Thursday, September 23, 2010 • Posted September 23, 2010

This past Thursday the San Saba JV football team travelled to Hamilton to take on the Bulldogs. As the game opened, the Armadillo defense took the field first. Good plays by Luis Vega, Kolton Ellis, and Dusty Parum helped to stop the Hamilton attack and forced a punt. Once having the ball, the San Saba offense drove some but also had to punt. After a few exchanges, the Dillos began to move down the field. Good runs by Jordan Watson and Garrett Hartranft got the team a little closer each time. Finally Garrett Hartranft scored on a 3 yard run play. Kolton Ellis converted the two-point try on a pass to the left from JT Mathis in the swinging gate formation. Good defensive play continued during the rest of the first half. Jordan Watson made an incredible one-handed interception and broke free down the sideline. Watson was about to score defensively except for a blocking in the back penalty that brought it back out to the twenty-five yard line. This resulted in a halftime score of 8-0 in favor of San Saba.

In the second half, each side had a possession with not much offensive action. Midway in the third quarter, Hamilton broke free on what seemed to be a delayed draw. Their running back went about 45 yards for the score, but the two point play was unsuccessful. That makes the score 8-6 in favor of the Armadillos. Just after the start of the fourth quarter, JT Mathis intercepted a Hamilton pass, which gave us possession just on the Hamilton side of the fifty-yard line. Good blocking by Wesley Gates, Brian Rogers, Kristian McCoury, Nathan Amstead, and Kolton Haverland helped to lead the way. This allowed the offense to get down to the fourteen-yard line. We tried our swinging gate from scrimmage and only got three yards closer, to the eleven-yard line. A bootleg left play found Luis Vega as an open receiver just across the goal line and right next to the pylon. JT Mathis connected for the second score of the game. The swinging gate two point try was unsuccessful leaving the score at 14-6 Armadillos. The rest of the game was played out with great defensive play by Jordan Watson, Joe Lindsey, Juan Ortega, and Isaac Zepeda, which secured the first victory of the season. The JV team is now (1-3) and will be hosting the Lago Vista Vikings this Thursday at Rogan Field at 6:00. We look forward to seeing you there.
