JV Armadillos struggle to open football season
Thursday, September 16, 2010 • Posted September 16, 2010

Back on August 26, the 2010 football season began with our JV team hosting the Ballinger Bearcats at Rogan Field. Ballinger busted several big plays against our defense. Offensively we struggled, but managed to score a touchdown by Kelan Verette on a run play. Overall, we fought hard, but did not come out on top. We lost the game 30-6.

Then on September 2, we travelled up the road to take on Goldthwaite. The Eagles got the ball to start the game. A long drive resulted in a touchdown for the Eagles and an early lead 7-0. When the Armadillos got the ball, we went 3 plays and out. As we tried to punt, the snap went over the punter’s head and out of the end zone. Now the lead was 9-0. Goldthwaite drove again and scored again making the score 17-0. Some injuries were creating some personnel issues and made it hard to get on a roll. Eventually in the third quarter, Garrett Hartranft ran the ball to the left side, broke several tackles, kept his balance and ran for a 55 yard touchdown run. Goldthwaite scored a few more times and won the game. The final score was 30-6 in favor of the Eagles.

This past Thursday, the Armadillos hosted the Wall Hawks. On the opening drive, the Hawks busted a long run for a touchdown and did not convert the point after try. A hard fought battle on both sides of the ball for both teams resulted in no more scoring in the first quarter. About halfway through the second quarter, San Saba began to move the ball and drive downfield with run plays. Eventually, Garrett Hartranft broke free for a 35 yard touchdown run. We did not convert on our two point play. So we settled for a 6-6 halftime score. The entire third quarter was great defensive play for both teams. In the fourth quarter, a Dillo punt pinned the Hawks deep in their own territory. A reverse handoff by Wall enabled a runner to go 94 yards for a touchdown. They converted the two point conversion and led 14-6. With about 8 minutes left in the game, San Saba tried to answer. A couple of first downs advanced the ball to the Wall 35 yard line. As JT Mathis dropped back to pass, the Hawks intercepted and ran it all the way back for another quick touchdown with 5 minutes left in the game. Now down 20-6, San Saba tried to move the ball once again. On the Wall side of the 50 yard line, we went for it on a fourth down to keep the drive alive and did not succeed with 2:30 left in the game. The Hawks ended up marching down the field and punching in another touchdown on a quarterback keeper and making their two point play to push the lead to 28-6 with less than a minute left on the clock. We told the team this was the most lopsided 6-6 game we had been a part of. The majority of the game the score was 6-6 until right at the end. We have learned from this and are focused on next week.

The JV Armadillo record is 0-3. We will be playing in Hamilton this Thursday at 6:00 at Bulldog Stadium. Our next home game will be on Thursday, September 23, at 6:00 at Rogan Field. Thank you for your support.
