8th Dillos fall to Wall

The 8th Dillos opened the 2010 season with a 20-8 defeat by the Wall 8th grade Hawks. The young Dillos played good defense, but the offense played Santa Claus by giving up the ball for easy Wall scores.

San Saba kicked to Wall to open the game. Wall proceeded to drive the ball with a series of run plays and completing 2 passes. The Hawks drove the ball to the Dillo 3 yard line before fumbling. Joel Franco recovered the fumble for San Saba. San Saba's offense took over at their own 3 yard line. Gabe Zimmer ran for 2,3 and then 9 to gain a first down. Blocks by Joel Franco, Joseph Messer, Cristian Guerrero, Emiliano Zapata, Bryan Riggs, Drew Daniel, Luis Macias, Nick Guerrero and Saul Cervantes paved the way. After the first down, Zimmer added 2 runs of 3 yards and then one for no gain. The Dillos punted. The punt was short giving Wall good field position as the quarter changed 0-0 the score. The Dillo defense stopped Wall on 4th down to regain possession of the football. Gabe Zimmer ran for 3, then added 3 more before breaking loose for 19 yards on a sweep sprung by Joel Franco and Ricky Villa.

The next play was a 5 yard penalty for illegal procedure. The Dillos fumbled the next play and Wall scooped up the fumble and scored. Wall ran the swinging gate successfully for the PAT, 8-0 Hawks. Gabe Zimmer returned the ensuing kick-off 90 yards only to be rubbed out by a penalty. Joel Franco promptly raced 83 yards on the next play. He was drug down from behind at the Hawk 7 yard line. Zimmer lost 2 yards then gained 9. The Dillos fumbled and then had an incomplete pass on 4th down. 8-0 Wall at the half.

San Saba received the second half kick-off. Zimmer ran for no gain then 2 and 7. The Dillos were forced to punt. Good defense by Emiliano Zapata, Will Cooley, Juan Gonzales, Jose Lopez, Fernando Rocha, Benito Martinez, Ridge Smith and Joseph Messer slowed the Wall offense for a while. Eventually Wall drove down and scored. They faked a kick on the PAT. It was stopped and the score was 14-0 Wall.

Wall kicked to San Saba. Zimmer lost 3 yards as the quarter changed. Welch was sacked for a loss. The Dillos lined up to punt. The snap went over the punter's head and Wall took over at the Dillo 3 yard line. The Dillo defense held them out for 3 plays. A penalty by San Saba on 4th down gave Wall new life. They scored the next play. The kick was missed for the PAT, 20-0 Wall. Wall then kicked to San Saba. San Saba took over at its own 40 yard line. Jose Lopez ran for 6 yards then 1. Zimmer ran for 10. San Saba fumbled and Wall got the ball. San Saba defense led by Garrett Welch, Saul Cervantes, Juan Gonzales, Bryan Riggs, Ridge Smith and Calob Hardman stopped Wall on 4th down. Welch's pass to Nick Guerrero was incomplete. Zimmer ran for 17 yards. He added 25 more on blocks by D.J. Martin, Joel Franco, Ricky Villa, Drew Daniel and Will Cooley. Zimmer ran for 10 more. A pass from Garrett Welch to Gabe Zimmer was good for a touchdown from 12 yards out. Will Cooley's run for the PAT was good. The score was 20-8 Wall.

There were some good things the 8th Dillos did. The mistakes they made proved costly. The game was much closer than the score. The 8th Dillos play Hamilton Thursday night at home.
