San Saba County 4-H Activities

Several 4-H activities/projects are starting up this month or soon. To help you understand the projects, here is a little information. Any project or activity you are interested in call the Co. Extension Office at 372-5416 or email cl-mcdowell@tamu.edu.

4-H Shooting Sports

This project meets twice a month from September to May. Youth who want to participate in this project have to participate in two mandatory safety classes. The safety classes are only offered once a year. They will be offered this fall. If you have a youth interested call the extension office at 372-5416 and register your child. Once the youth have attended the safety classes, they participate in practice sessions twice a month. Each practice session lasts about 1 ½ hours. Youth will improve their shooting abilities and can compete in fun competitions in Brownwood, Brady, etc. Some rifles are available to use for you who do not own a rifle. It is very important that the rifle size matches the height and weight of a youth. Mark Hedley is the project manager for the Shooting Sports Project.

4-H Archery

This project also meets twice a month on Saturday’s following shooting sports. The required safety class is fairly short and can be done the same day of the practice if prior arrangements have been made. In September archery is meeting Saturday September 11

4-H Food & Nutrition

4-H Food Fun Day will be held Saturday September 25

Livestock Show Projects

San Saba Co. Youth also begin livestock show projects in the fall. Lamb, goat, and swine are available for the youth. Validation for goats and lambs is October 16

th and 25th at 9:30 at the Hedley Ranch. 4-H does have some equipment for youth to use in they do not own a bow. Youth sometimes do 3D targets for fun and can enter several close by competitions for archery. Mark Hedley is the project manager for Archery. th, 9 a.m. at the San Saba High School’s Homemaking Building. Youth will learn food preparation skills, food safety, and nutrition. At this year’s activity, youth will be make pasta from scratch and learn how to make Italian bread. To reserve your spot call the Extension office at 372-5416. Cost for the workshop is $10.00. The fee includes cost of lunch and other supplies needed for the day. Other parts of the project include: Co. Food Show in October and District Food Show in November. th.
