Reyes advances to NCAA Regional Track Meet

The Stephen F. Austin Men and Women Track and Field Teams wrapped up the 2008 Southland Conference Outdoor Championship on Sunday, May 11, in Huntsville, Texas. The Jacks scored 83.5 points to place 5th overall and the Ladyjacks scored 124.83 to place 3rd overall.

Justin Reyes, a 2004 graduate of Richland Springs High School, now a senior at SFA, scored points for the Jacks in the high jump, clearing 6-10 3/4. There were 17 contestants with the opening height beginning at 6-4 3/4. Justin was the only one that passed at this height. He cleared 6-6 3/4 and 6-8 3/4 on his first trys. At 6-10 3/4, there were still nine jumpers left trying to clear the 6-10 3/4. Justin cleared the bar on his third jump. Six others also cleared and moved on to the next level.

The bar was then moved to 7-0 3/4, and out of the seven jumpers, only two contestants cleared that mark on their third try. Andrew Duncan III of Texas-Arlington won the SLC title with less misses. Justin placed 6th overall and will advance to the NCAA Regional Meet in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 30, 2008.He will compete at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

Justin is ranked 18th in the Mid-West Conference that includes athletes from Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa,Oklahoma, Minnesota, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. He is ranked 51st out of the top 98 high jumpers in the Nation for Division 1. To qualify for the Regional Meet, high jumpers must have cleared 6-10 3/4 during the 2008 Outdoor Season.

Justin will graduate from Stephen F. Austin University in December of 2008 with a Physics Degree.
