The San Saba Ladies Golf Association held their annual Four Lady Spring Pecan Classic Tournament on May 17, 2008. This tournament was sponsored by the City National Bank of San Saba, Texas. The City National Bank has sponsored this tournament for several years and the ladies are most appreciative of this generous gesture. It is one of the many perks of living in small town rural Texas! The community always comes together to sponsor many local events.
Their were nineteen teams of four ladies from all over central Texas, with two teams coming all the way from Athens, Texas. The ladies were greeted by the club president, Anita Miles, and the club pro, Keith Harris, with a welcome and a few rules explained. They were served coffee, juice, and donut holes upon arrival and had snacks of tea, cheese, peanut butter, and crackers throughout play. Jay Carney and Pat Ribb worked in the concession stand and the ladies always appreciate this service. Thanks to Jay and Pat for a job well done! They made all the ladies feel welcomed to San Saba, Texas.
The ladies were served a beautiful salad luncheon of pasta salad, chicken salad, and fruit salad complimented with homemade bread. Of course, the dessert was the traditional pecan pie! We are the “Pecan Capital of the World!” This was catered by Betty Ann Johnson, she’s like one of the members, always has wonderful food and pleasant and a joy to have among our ranks. We appreciate Betty Ann!
And San Saba had winners! In the Second Flight the Sterner team of Dorothy Sterner, Barbara Sterner, Debbie Lee, and Kay Barclay were second place with a 67. This is a team that plays every year. It consists of mother, Dorothy, two daughters, Debbie and Kay, and a daughter-in-law, Barbara. They always have a great time together!
In the Third Flight the team of Sandee Hartley, Becky Hardin, Shirley Hardin, and Bobbie Churchill placed second with a 68. We are always proud when our locals have a winning place!
The ladies are few in number these days, so it takes all of us for a successful tournament and that’s exactly what we had. All the members did more than their part and everything went smoothly and it was a great tournament. Many visiting ladies remarked about how they like the San Saba Tournament. We are proud of our course and our pro, Keith Harris. He is shaping up our course and it will soon be one of the best in central Texas! We do so appreciate Keith!
Other San Saba teams were: Hattie Rogers, Jo Ann Snow, Priscilla Muse, and Bette Odom and Anita Miles, Jo Anne Hardy, Betty Sue Hardy, and Olga Cantu.
The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met May 15, 2008 for play day with Sandee Hartley, in the absence of the Chair for May, calling for a game of Low Net. First Place went to Jo Ann Snow, Second Place Anita Miles, and Third Place Sandee Hartley. Anita was the Low Gross for the day and Sandee had the only birdie of the day. Jo Ann Snow and Hattie Rogers chipped in to split the chip in pot.
Lots of golf this weekend and that’s the way we like it! “Swinging!”
