We had .3 inch of rain Friday night here in Richland Springs, but the rodeo was rained out at Elm Grove. They had just gotten about three events out of the way when it started raining. We waited awhile, thinking it might stop, but the arena was just too muddy and the lightening was too dangerous for the kids and horses. It was called off and resumed at 1:00 PM on Saturday. It was terribly hot, but they picked up where they had left off, with the goat scramble and went on through the afternoon. After a couple hours of rest, they started again with the Saturday night performance at 8:00 PM. There were more bronc riders than usual and the bucking horses put on a good show. Some of the horses came from the Rocker B Ranch near Barnhart. There was a large number of contestants, some traveling great distances. We see quite a few third generation kids competing. Sam Campbell competed years ago and he and his wife were there to watch their grandkids. Lee Miller and Wayne Gossett are two more Grandpas there with their grandchildren. I’m sure there are a lot more. I hear the barbecue was good as always. I haven’t heard how the trailride went but I’ll bet it was plenty hot! All in all, it was a good rodeo and I know all the help was appreciated. Mark your calendars for August 4,5,&6, 2011 and we will do it again. That will mark the 60th year since the roping club was first organized. I think something special is in the planning.
We enjoyed visiting with Marla Cummings and her Mom, Jami, and her cousin, Casey, at the rodeo. Marla will be attending school in Rising Star this year.
The Busy Bee quilters will meet On Tuesday this week. The 42 tournament will be Saturday night at Shiloh. The community meeting will be the 21st. Kitty Cummings and Bonnie Evans will serve as hostesses.
Marilyn and Bethany Suber and I took off this morning and went to Brownwood first, then on to San Angelo. After Bethany registered for classes at Howard College, we met Stacie, Santos and Sophia Elizondo for lunch and shopping. I don’t see how it is possible, but I believe Sophia is cuter than the last time we saw her! She is 2 months old and smiling and "talking" to us now.
The football teams are all practicing and getting ready to kick off a new season. We watched the Cowboys and the Bengals game Sunday night and saw Jordan Shipley make the big return run. We enjoyed watching Jordan when he played with Colt McCoy for UT.
