San Saba ISD Board covers variety of topics at meeting

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD met on Monday, July 19th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order and gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

Student Kristin Reynolds gave plants as a special thank you to the Board for supplying the funds for her to go to Chicago to participate in national FCCLA competition. Kristin received a silver medal and hopes to compete again next year.

Superintendent Glaze gave information on the following items:

1. The next Board Meeting will be Monday, August 16 at 6 p.m.

2. Reported on the Vision 2020 Grant and T3; enhancing education through technology; and the Tier III Grant.

3. The TASA Summer Conference is scheduled.

4. Summer Maintenance included the track reopening Friday, July 16 with covers on the track for cleats, a water fountain and bench are being installed; the new chairs and desks for the laptops for the high school are in; the floors in the buildings are refinished; Sheriff Brown has allowed selected inmates on campus to help with fencing at Annex & Church Streets.

5. A gas leak last week resulted in an $8,000 expense.

The Board approved the following Agenda:

A. Regular minutes and Executive Session minutes from June 14th and Special Budget Workshop minutes from June 24th.

B. Amended 2009-2010 budget.

C. Pay the bills.

D. Financial Report.

E. Accepted donations.

F. Student transfers for the 2010-2011 school year.

Assistant Superintendent, Michael Bohensky, could not attend the meeting because he was attending a Principal’s Institute at Harvard in Massachusetts. He was awarded this opportunity by Raise Your Hands Texas. Bohensky communicated with Superintendent Glaze to inform the Board that 14 SSISD personnel attended a CSCOPE conference that was very helpful.

High School Principal, Woody Martin, distributed a report that included the tentative enrollment, school activities information, the students will get laptops on August 24th with a three day training; the Dilloettes are at summer camp; he has been meeting some parents at ball games and getting acquainted with the community. He is in the process of moving his family to San Saba.

Elementary Principal, Kay Shackleford, reported that the school looks great because of summer maintenance and moving things around getting ready for the start of classes; they are taking orders for school supplies.

Middle School Principal, Vicki Key, reported on summer school tests; TAKS; scheduled activities; cheerleaders; the Middle School list of supplies will be in the July 22 paper; school registration is August 10th; the CSCOPE Conference she attended was helpful by sharing and getting other ideas.

Action was taken on the following New Business:

a. Reviewed bids for 2010-2011 for food, non-food items, fuel and oil.

b. No action on student insurance carrier for 2010-2011.

c. Approved appraisal calendar and appraisers.

d. Approved Multi Regional Child Nutrition Cooperative Purchasing Program - ESC 10,buying cooperatively.

e. Approved 2010-2011 Tentative Tax Rate for Inclusion in Official Notice for Publication.

f. Set M & O Budget and Tax Rate meetings for August 16th at 4:30 p.m. and August 30th at noon. Public notices will be posted.

g. Reviewed state requirements for menus; lunch fees can be paid online by credit card; set the lunch price of $2.25 for all campuses.

h. Reviewed student handbook including cell phone regulations; and changes to dress code.

i. Discussed a TEA low rate Bond awarded to qualified school construction bonds. A representative will be in San Saba July 21st at 1p.m.

President Barker adjourned the meeting with a short break before an Executive session.

In the Executive session the Board accepted with regrets the resignation of Jenny Spinks, 2nd grade teacher. The Board hired Tracie Taylor for 2nd grade teacher.
