Beat the Heat
Thursday, July 8, 2010 • Posted July 8, 2010

Summer is here. Hot summer days calls for wise preparation for the heat. What should you do to beat the heat? Drink water. A simple answer. Why do we need water. It carries nutrients to cells and helps carry waste out. How long can we live without water? We can only survive a few days without it. We can live a whole lot longer without food.

How much water should we drink? Each person is different. There is no standard recommendation for the amount of water to be consumed daily. What signs can you look for to be sure you are properly hydrated? A dry mouth and/or urine with a strong odor, low volume, and dark color are signals of dehydration. Some people with health conditions cannot drink as much water as healthy people. Those with health concerns, such as heart conditions, should consult with their physician to determine how much water they should drink per day.

Is drinking water the only way to keep hydrated? No. Fruits, fruit juices, tea, coffee, sports drinks, soft drinks and some foods can also provide water for our bodies. What is the best way to stay hydrated? Plain water is the best during normal activities. For activities lasting longer than 60-90 minutes, a sport drink may be more beneficial to staying hydrated.
