City employee, Larry Alderson, hired as new Electric Department Director

The San Saba City Council met for a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, June 8th at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. Before attending to the agenda, the winning candidates gave their Statement of Elected Officer and Oath of Office administered by City Secretary, Gale Ivy. Those re-elected were: Mayor, Kenneth Jordan; and Aldermen, Oleta Behrens & Martha Leigh Whitten.

Mayor Kenneth Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present and noted that Alderman Marvin Riggs was absent.

Martha Leigh Whitten gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

Shawn Oliver was appointed to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem.

John Robins, a representative of Mesquite Fuels & Agriculture, Inc. of Irving, Texas, addressed the Council. He was accompanied by Jack Lauterbach and Robert Wallace. San Saba is being considered as the site for a Mesquite Fuel Power Plant that would employ approximately 88 people. Mr. Robins gave information about the plan of operation, and the type of property that is needed.

City Manager, Stan Weik, assisted by Martha Leigh Whitten, presented Timothy Woerndell with the Employee of the Month Award. Timothy has been employed by the City in the Sanitation Dept. for over five years and will enjoy the $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant and the day off with pay.

The following consent agenda items were approved:

1. Minutes from the April 16th and May 12th meetings with County Commissioners & May 11th Council meeting.

2. Payment of bills presented to City Council.

3. Resolution No. 2010-21 to waive noise for August 7th at the Pavilion at Risien Park.

4. Resolution No. 2010-22 to waive noise for August 7th at the Gazebo at Mill Pond Park.

Action was taken on the following after discussion of the items:

A. Approved to close the 300 & 400 blocks of East Wallace Street on both sides of the street one hour prior and during the Rodeo Parade and Christmas Lighted Parade.

B. Approved to waive ordinance prohibiting fireworks within the city limits for the July 4th celebration.

C. Selected the City National Bank as the depository bid for fiscal year beginning October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2015 for the City of San Saba.

D. Kevin Shahan, CPA, distributed the Audit Report and compared the figures to the prior year. The Council approved the audit.

City Manager, Stan Weik gave a report on the following:

a. Update on Water Park law suit.

b. Update on Golf Course with information by Golf Pro, Keith Harris.

c. New downtown sidewalk plan in progress.

d. Water Tank project progressing.

e. The Waste Water Treatment Plant project has been delayed and hopeful for Grant funding.

f. Announced that the new Electric Department Director is Larry Alderson, who has worked for the City for many years.

Gale Ivy, City Secretary, gave a report on a Workshop, "Waste in Place," sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. One of the projects during the workshop was making a "pizza" of things that are found in landfills such as paper, yard trimmings, food, plastic, rubber, glass, batteries, and etc. This illustration can be presented to schools to help put "Waste in Place."

Al Hamrick, Code Enforcement Director, reported five more homes were condemned in the city.

Mayor Jordan adjourned the meeting.
