Glenn L. Weatherman, age 89, of Mercury, died Wednesday evening, June 9, 2010, on the day of his 70th wedding anniversary, at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 PM Monday, June 14th at the Mercury Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Walts of San Antonio and Rev. Keith Simpson officiating. Burial followed in the Cox Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Visitation was held from 5 – 7 pm on Sunday evening, June 13th at the funeral home.

Glenn was born September 20, 1920 in McCulloch County the son of William George and Alberta "Bertie" Long Weatherman. He grew up in McCulloch County and later married Mildred Smith on June 9, 1940. He worked in law enforcement all of his life and served as a U.S. Border Patrol agent for over 27 years, retiring in 1971. He served in El Paso, Ysleta, Laredo, Alice, Eagle Pass, again in Alice, Brownsville, Harlingen, El Centro, California, and Del Rio where he was serving when he retired. Glenn also served in the District Attorney’s office of the 63rd District Court for 7 years and later was elected as the Sheriff of McCulloch County where he served for 4 years. He also served in the Emergency Management of McCulloch County and was instrumental in helping to bring a much higher level of emergency care and rescue services to the area. Following that, he managed the Eden Detention Center in Eden, Texas.

Glenn was always very active in his community and was ordained as a deacon while in Eagle Pass in 1951,and he was serving as a deacon in the Mercury Baptist Church at the time of his death. He was a member of the Richland Springs Masonic Lodge; a member of the Order of Eastern Star #264; a member of the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees and of the Federal Order of Retired Border Patrol Officers.

Glenn will be remembered by many as a very kind and generous man who was always willing to help others. He will be deeply missed both as a friend and as a professional law enforcement agent.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mildred Weatherman of Mercury; a son, Jerald Weatherman and wife Gloria of Elm Grove, Texas; two daughters, Sarah Elliott and husband Walter of San Antonio; and Dr. Margaret Clem and husband Alan of Orlando, Florida; his sister Joyce Rhone of San Angelo; 5 grandchildren, Donald "Donnie" Munford and wife Taryn; Glenn Munford and wife Sue; Jerry Weatherman and wife Pam; Monica Edmondson and husband Scott; and M’Liss Rodman and husband Steve; 11 great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, 2 sisters, and a great-granddaughter.

The family requests memorials to be made to the American Heart Association or to the Richland Springs Masonic Lodge.
