DPS honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty

Twelve Texas law officers who have lost their lives while on duty during the past two years were honored May 11 during the annual DPS Memorial Service at the DPS Training Academy in Austin.

"Each year, we take time to remember our fallen brothers and sisters in law enforcement. I want their families to know that we honor and respect their sacrifices, and will never forget the price their loved ones paid to keep us safe," said Steve McCraw, director of the DPS.

Officers killed accidentally while performing their duties in 2010:

Officer Craig Story of Arlington PD died in a traffic crash on Jan. 13, 2010.

Officer Timothy Zurovetz of Forest Hill PD died in a traffic crash on Mar. 24, 2010.

Deputy Sheriff Jacob Rene Rayos of Reeves County SO died in a traffic crash on April 11, 2010.

Officer Rodney Holder of Abilene PD died in a traffic crash on April 29, 2010.

Officers killed feloniously while performing their duties in 2009:

Senior Corporal Norman Smith of Dallas PD was killed on Jan. 6, 2009 while serving an arrest warrant.

Lieutenant Stuart Alexander of Corpus Christi PD was killed on Mar. 11, 2009 during a police chase after a disturbance call.

Sergeant Randy White of Bridgeport PD was killed on April 2, 2009 during a vehicle pursuit after a hit-and-run crash.

Officer Henry Canales of Houston PD was killed on June 23, 2009 during an undercover investigation of stolen televisions.

Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler of Chambers County SO was killed on July 13, 2009 after responding to the scene of a shooting.

Officer Jesse Hamilton of Pasadena PD was killed on Aug. 21, 2009 while responding to a disturbance call.

Officers killed accidentally while performing their duties in 2009:

Deputy Sheriff D. Robert Harvey of Lubbock County SO died on April 26, 2009 in a traffic crash.

Deputy Sheriff Francis David Blake of Burnet County SO died on Oct. 3, 2009 in a traffic crash.
