May 17, 2010 - Each year at this time we begin planning and evaluating the need for summer school. It seems summer school has a negative tone to it, but in reality, summer school can serve as a time for students to catch up and get ahead in their academic progress.

Typically, SSISD offers four types of summer school. We offer time for remediating students who have not passed or barely passed the TAKS test; we offer credit recover due credit lost because of failure or lack of attendance; we offer summer school for students who are limited in their grasp of the English language, and we offer summer school for students in the lower grades, K-8, who have not passed three of the four core subject areas. As well, SSHS offers an ACT/SAT institute for students needing to brush up on their test taking skills and in preparation for these two college entrance exams. As well, the high school generally offers the THEA test during the early summer so that students wanting to enroll in dual credit can get this completed and prior to the new school year. The THEA is a Texas exam that is required before students enroll in college courses. Since students have the opportunity to enroll in college courses during their junior year, Dana Pannell, SSHS counselor provides the students this opportunity. The THEA proves readiness for college courses and indicates if students need any type of remediation prior to enrolling in college courses.

Of course, we hope that all students are on grade level, passing all their TAKS and have attended school regularly to receive their credit; however, if they have not and summer school is needed, then SSISD is prepared to offer such a setting. With this said numbers dictate need and if adequate numbers are not represented then only the NEEDED summer school will be provided. Campus principals and counselors will be identifying students in need of summer school as we get closer to the end of school. Please contact the campus principal or the counselor where your child attends school to ask about summer school opportunities.
