Last Sunday we ventured west to Odessa on a four hour voyage. Oh for the days of travel to Abilene to ACU. Maybe Coach Pannell and Mrs. Glaze could work on this for us in the future. On the girl’s side we took three athletes to Odessa. Haylee Oliver competed in the high jump and polevault. Haylee tied her personal best in the polevault and cleared 9'. She didn’t place in the top six but she competed well and is to be commended. A big thanks to Mr. Bohensky for being her vault coach. He is awesome and did a great job with her and the middle school vaulters. Haylee also competed in the high jump and cleared 5'. Jennifer Anaya rebounded nicely from last year. Jennifer jumped in the 200 and didn’t get to run as a sophomore but she came back determined and not only ran well but she made the finals and finished 7th overall in a very quick 200. Our Region will do well in Austin in the 200 as 24.4 won the event. Jennifer had a great year and has matured into a great leader for our Lady Dillo Track Team. Our last contestant was Danessa Vasquez. Danessa finished fourth in the 3200. We were hoping for a trip to Austin this year as she finished third last year but things didn’t fall our way. Her fourth place finish wasn’t for lack of effort or desire. Nessa competed hard just like she always does and represented San Saba very well. Nessa had the second fastest time coming in but just like the boys 3200 things fell differently. The Bale kid from Kermit and the Escalante kid from Crane had the fastest times as well at 10:02 and 10:05 but they didn’t advance. I visited with Henry Anderson, the 3 time STATE CHAMP coach at Crane, and he offered this up about our Region- "great competitors and an always tough distance Region." Nessa also ran the 1600 and finished sixth.
Nessa had a great year once again and is a pleasure to coach, she works her tail off in practice and if she doesn’t win, it’s not because of a lack of effort. Like I’ve said before, "we may not win 1st all the time but we make others work to beat us!!" Keep on Keep’n on Nessa!!
I would like to thank the parents who showed up in Odessa to support our kids. I know it was a long trip but your presence was appreciated. A thanks to both Coach Easterwoods, Coach Welch, and Coach Pannell for supporting and coaching our athletes. A thanks once again to Mr. Bohensky for working with our vaulters and to Coach Rundell for coaching our middle school athletes and for pointing out that Alexa started her kick really early in the 1600 and did exactly as I told her to do. Later until next spring.
