Texas career and technology education students and community leaders were recognized Monday, April 21, 2008, at the annual Best of Texas Awards Ceremony. Courtney Womack, FFA member at San Saba High School, was named the Best of Texas Outstanding Agriculture Science Student runner-up. A cash scholarship and commemorative plaque was presented to winners and runners-up in each division.

“As we look at the qualities of the Best of Texas award recipients, we can all be reassured that our state and nation are in capable hands. These students hold not only their future, but our future in their hands, and those hands are highly competent,” commented Mickey Ohlendorf, Best of Texas chairperson and Career and Technology Association of Texas member.

The Best of Texas Awards are sponsored by the Texas Career and Technology Council (TCTC) and was initiated to recognize outstanding achievements by students enrolled in career and technology education, and exemplary contributions by businesses and community leaders who have dedicated their support to career and technology programs. School districts throughout Texas submitted nominations in 13 awards categories.

The awards ceremony was held at 10:00 a.m. at the William B. Travis Building in Austin. The Best of Texas festivities kicked-off with a breakfast reception and award recipients were treated to lunch at the Capitol Grill following the ceremony. Several of the award recipients’ state legislators attended the event and visited with their respective students.

The TCTC is an organization representing nine professional organizations of career and technology education.
