Tayler Hibler, Joannah Crosby and Tarah Crosby Qualify for State 2A Tennis Tournament.

The San Saba Tennis Team played in the Region I-2A Tournament in Odessa, Texas on April 21-22. San Saba took nine players to the regional meet and three of them will move on to the state meet on May 10-11. Tayler Hibler won girls singles and Joannah Crosby and Tarah Crosby came in second place in girls doubles, these three players qualified for the state tournament. Nicole Sears and Chase Key came close to qualifying for state as they took third place medals in mixed doubles. Diego Gonzalez and Marshall McIntosh were quarterfinalists in boys doubles. Lauren Dawson and Reid Casco had to play the regional champions from Wall in the first round and played them closer than anyone in the tournament before losing 6-4, 6-1.

This will be Tayler Hibler’s third trip to the state tournament as she won third place her sophomore year and second place her junior year at state. Tayler dominated girls singles at regionals this year as no one at regionals were able to come close to winning against Tayler. Tayler defeated Blackwell from Shallowater 6-1,6-0 in the semifinals and then defeated Sultan from Shallowater by the same score 6-1, 6-0. Joannah Crosby and Tarah Crosby ( the comeback kids) knocked off the number 3 seeded team from Sonora in the first round. They were down 4 to 1 in the second set but came back to win the next 5 games in a row to take the match 6-3, 6-4. In the third place match Crosby – Crosby lost the first set 6-0 and were down in the third set 5 -3 to Shallowater before coming back to win the second set 7-6 and the third set 7-5. In the playback for second place against Bowie the Crosbys’ won the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 6-2 and came back once again to win the third set 6-4. Nicole Sears and Chase Key defeated the third seeded team from Ozona 6-3, 6-0 in the third place match but was unable to get a playback match for second place. All these kids played extremely well and we took more medals home than any other school and more players going to state than any other school that were at regionals.

The State Tournament will be held at Penick-Allison Tennis Courts on University of Texas campus in Austin on May 10-11. Girls singles will start at 10:15 a.m. and girls doubles will start at 11:30 a.m. on Monday the 10th. Hope to see all of you at state as these young people will need your support.

Semifinals: Crosby – Crosby lost to Helms – Terrell (Floydada) 6-1, 6-0

Third Place: Crosby – Crosby defeated Key – Ortego (Shallowater) 0-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Playback for Second: Crosby – Crosby defeated Stallcup-Stuckey (Bowie) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
