The Armadillo track team had a great showing at the District track meet in Ballinger on April 7th. District Champions included Gary Gant, Ryan Plumley, Devin Moreno, and Kevin Socha in the 800m Relay. Regional Qualifiers included: Justin Barker-Pole Vault; Devin Moreno-Triple Jump/400m relay/800m relay; Kevin Socha-100m/400m relay/800m relay; Ryan Plumley-400m relay/800m relay; Luke Haug-400m relay800m relay; Gary Gant-400m relay/800m relay; and Diego Gonzales in the 800m and 1600m run. The team scored a very respectable 88 points at District to come in 4th Place overall, just 15 points out of 2nd Place.
The Regional track meet in Abilene proved to be a place for overcoming adversity for the Armadillos, as well as a future star being born. In the field events, Justin Barker had a respectable vault of 12'0 and Devin Moreno performed well in the triple jump. The prelims got off to a good start for San Saba as the boys qualified 3rd in the 400m Relay.
Then tragedy struck as the Armadillos fastest runner, Kevin Socha, injured his leg in his 100m qualifying heat and ended his dream of a state birth. Not 15 minutes later, Luke Haug stepped in for Socha as a last second alternate in the 800m Relay, and ran a great leg as all the boys overcame the chaos and qualified 5th for the finals. Unfortunately, Socha's injury kept him out of the finals of the meet and both relays would have to dig down deep to compete without Kevin.
The 400m Relay ran a good race and ended up in 4th Place. The 800m Relay of Gary Gant, Luke Haug, Ryan Plumley, and Devin Moreno would outdo their qualifying performance and ran their best time of the year finishing in 3rd Place with a bronze medal and just one spot from qualifying for the state meet.
To end the meet freshman Diego Gonzales put on a gutsy performance and ended up 4th Place out of 24 runners in the 1600m. Gonzales took the lead on the 3rd lap of the mile and held everyone off until the last 200m. His time of 4:39 was his personal best and an outstanding time for a freshman. Diego is definitely someone to watch in future years of track and field.
The Armadillos had a great 2008 track season and set the bar high for future Armadillo teams.
