San Saba High School Alumni Association to present Ralph Cox Honorary Membership

The San Saba High School Alumni Association will hold its fourth Annual Meeting at the Elementary School Cafeteria on Saturday, May 17th at 10:30 AM. The meeting will include reports from several committees as well as the election of directors and officers. The meeting will be followed by a luncheon catered by Larry Daniel. Other activities of the day include a golf tournament at 2:00 PM at the San Saba Golf Course followed by a dinner and dance at the Golf Course Pavilion. The dinner will be catered by Betty Ann Johnson. The highlight of the annual meeting will be the presentation of an Honorary Membership to Ralph Cox.

Ralph Cox graduated from Pecos High School in 1964. After high school he chose to attend South Plains Junior College where he graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree. To complete his undergraduate education, he went on to attend Texas Tech University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1966. He went on to obtain his Masters of Education Degree from Texas Tech in 1969. While attending South Plains Junior College he lettered in baseball and was selected as an All-conference player for the two years he competed there. He also lettered in baseball while attending Texas Tech.

After completing his graduate education and before he began teaching, Ralph spent two years in the Army from 1970-1972.

Ralph has been an active coach in all of his years as an educator. He has taught math and coached for 37 years in the public schools in Texas. He has coached basketball for 10 years, football for 8 years, baseball for 1 year, and cross country for 1 year, but he has coached tennis for all of the 37 years he has been teaching. Ralph came to San Saba to teach and coach in 1982. During that tenure he has had the privilege to see 43 individual team members advance to the state tennis tournament. The San Saba High School Team Tennis has advanced to state 16 times under his coaching and he has had an individual team member advance to the state tournament 18 different times. As a coach, he currently holds a streak of 12 consecutive years that the San Saba High School Team Tennis has advanced to the state tournament.

Ralph has received several awards during his years as a coach. In 1976 he was named the “Man Who Did the Most for Lubbock Tennis” by the Lubbock Tennis Association. In 1996 he was named the Class AA Tennis Coach of the Year by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association and in the same year received the Lamar Teacher of the Year for the San Saba Schools. In 2000 he was again selected as the Class AA Tennis Coach of the Year by the Texas Tennis Coaches.

Ralph has been married to his wife Carla since 1967 and they have two sons, Michael Aaron Cox and Gregory Shayne Cox. In addition, they have five grandchildren. Ralph has been a great inspiration for students and athletes of San Saba High School and the San Saba High School Alumni Association is pleased to make him an Honorary Graduate.
