The San Saba Tennis Team has been very busy since April 1st. On April 1-3 the tennis team played in the Mason Tournament. Tayler Hibler won second place in girls singles. In mixed doubles, Nicole Sears and Chase Key defeated a team from Marble Falls to win third place. Lauren Dawson and Reid Casco almost had the upset of the tournament as they took last years state qualifiers from Sonora to 3 sets before losing. The Mason tournament really prepared our kids for District that was held on April 5-6 in Brownwood.
The Girls Team and the Boys Team won the District Team title. Tayler Hibler won 1st place in Girls Singles. Joannah Crosby and Tarah Crosby won 1st place in Girls Doubles. Nicole Sears and Chase Key won 1st place in Mixed Doubles. Diego Gonzalez and Marshall McIntosh won 1st place in Boys Doubles. Lauren Dawson and Reid Casco came in second place in Mixed Doubles. These nine players all qualify for the regional tournament to be held on April 21-22 in Odessa. Houston Casco and Josh Raiford are alternates in Boys Doubles as they came in third place. Jose Vega is also an alternate as he came in third place in Boys Singles.
B.J. Harbour came in 4th place in boys singles and Kelli Cox was a quarterfinalist in girls singles. In girls doubles Regan Hartranft and Brittany won consolation. All these players played very well and represented San Saba well.
In the Junior Varsity Division, Kolton Haverland won 1st place in Boys Singles. Luke Cox and J. T. Mathis won 1st place in Boys Doubles. Vanessa Aguirre and Heather Wilcox won consolation in Girls Doubles. Diego Lara and Jonathan Ramirez came in 5th place in Boys Doubles.
I want to give a special thanks to Jan Crosby for being in charge of the J.V. Divison and getting it played at the Brownwood Middle School. Also for Rachel Dawson for helping run the varsity tournament off. A very special thanks to all our tennis players for loading and unloading the equipment on the bus and for picking up the trash around the Brownwood courts without me having to say anything to them. Also for the players who helped at the tournament desk so I could be free to coach our players on the courts. I also want to thank Jackie Dyer for fixing our tournament brackets, everyone was very impressed. I also need to thank the booster club for buying our players uniforms this year. I have never seen a team more proud of the uniforms they had this year. Also a big thanks to the fire department to take the time to wash our tennis courts off. Also to all the parents who have supported us this year. Hope to see everyone in Odessa on April 21-22.
