When we hear the term or initials "UIL" we think mainly of how this organization governs our athletic events. However, the UIL – University Interscholastic League, does so much more. Throughout the academic year, the SSISD student body including students from elementary, middle and high school compete in academic contests governed by the UIL. So, what most of us think of is primarily an athletic organization is in fact an organization that impacts our academics as well. Students in elementary and middle school competed in their UIL District Academic Contest in the fall of the year. Once their contest is over at the district level, students do not advance to any further competition, much like district competition is in sports. However, at the high school level, students compete in academic events in the spring of the year at the UIL District Academic Meet and have an opportunity to advance from this contest to Regional and State Competition. If students compete at the State Competition in Austin, the rewards in potential scholarships is GREAT.

The University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive literary and academic competitive program in the nation. It offers more than any other UIL division in terms of activities, with 22 high school and 18 elementary and junior high contests. More than a half million students participate in UIL academic contests. In addition, the UIL sponsors the Interscholastic League Press Conference, one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most highly respected student press associations. These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills.

San Saba High School will be sending students to Odessa College to compete in the Region I 2A Regional Academic Meet on April 24. San Saba High School qualified students in Science, Math and Accounting Competitions. Along with these students advancing to Regional, many more students posted great marks at the District Competition. Congratulations are to be made to the students and teachers of San Saba High School, San Saba Elementary and San Saba Middle School for their efforts in District UIL District Academic Competition. San Saba ISD is the school with the smallest number of students competing in both the academic and athletic contests in our UIL competitive district and time and time again, our students emerge on top! Good Job Students – Keep the Hard Work!

Please make note that San Saba ISD will be observing one of the reserved bad weather days on Friday, April 2. Students and staff will not be attending school on this date.
