San Saba High School soloists advance to State Competition
Thursday, March 25, 2010 • Posted March 25, 2010

San Saba High School students Ryan Guidroz and Nick Tasker, traveled to the campus of Howard Payne University in Brownwood on February 6, 2010 to compete in the Regional UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. Ryan is the son of Tony and Debra Guidroz and Nick is the son of Karen and Edward Gonzalez.

This competition allows students to perform in a solo setting or in a chamber ensemble consisting of three or more people.

These types of competitions serve as wonderful supplements to the large ensemble format of the marching or concert band contests that are offered in the fall and spring each year. It allows the students to explore their more individual nature as musicians.

At this event, students can earn a rating from 1-5 (1 being the best). Thirty eight high school and junior high students competed. Nineteen students received a rating of 1 (superior), and 19 received a rating of 2 (excellent).

In order to advance to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble contest, one must memorize a Class I solo (the most challenging level of music for this level of student) and make a Division I on that particular regional audition. Ryan received a Division I rating on the snare drum piece "5 against 2." Nick also received a Division I rating on the alto sax piece "Syrinx." The two will advance to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest on May 29th, in Pflugerville, Texas.
