San Saba ISD School Board approves 2010-2011 School Calendar

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD held a Regular Meeting on Monday, March 8th at 7 p.m.in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker announced a quorum present, and gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

Athletic Director, Jeff Pannell, gave the following report: 40 students signed up for spring activities; announced All District Basketball Awards; tennis program update; baseball schedule and standings; Mill Pond Classic; softball program; track meet in Hico, report in San Saba News & Star; planning a Spring Sports Fundraiser.

The Principals gave comments for the selection of The Student of the Month from each campus.

Board member Kim Kirk helped present the awards to the following: Elementary, James Whitney; Middle School, Kelan Verette; High School Principal Harper Stewart presented the High School award to Tyler Lackey and Laken Miller.

High School teacher, Jerry Blankenship, demonstrated the Smart Board. Instead of using the "chalkboard," a laptop computer is connected to a large "white board" and the "tool" you need is a finger to draw on the board with no need of eraser, compass, ruler and other math tools.

High School Students of the month, Tyler Lackey and Laken Miller gave a presentation and video of their award winning presentation, Take a Hand, Take a Stand - STOP ABUSE.

Francis Brown, ESC XV Food Service Representative, gave a presentation regarding healthy life styles, education, exercise and eating right.

Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze reported on the following:

1. Next board meeting will be Monday, April 12th at 6 p.m.

2. The city recognition Banquet will be Thursday, March 11th.

3. Three people are candidates for the two Board of Trustee seats. They are: Kevin Shahan and incumbents Kim Kirk and Angela Johnson.

4. There will be a summer feeding program mandated by Governor Perry. The program will be for one meal 4 days a week with state reimbursement. Superintendent Glaze will check to see if churches in the area would be interested in helping with this project.

The following items were approved by the Board:

A. Minutes from February 5th and February 8th meetings.

B. Amended 2009-2010 Budget.

C. Payment of bills.

D. Financial report.

E. Accepted donation from San Saba All Sports Booster Club in the amount of $1500.

F. Transfers were accepted.

G. Application and Agreement for Commodities for 2010-2011.

H. Fees and elections compensation for May, 2010 election.

Assistant Superintendent Ashley Stewart gave a report on: CSCOPE progress; text books selection and publishing companies; TPRI; Math & Science courses; Swaps; tests and re-tests.

Kay Shackleford, Elementary Principal reported 297 students, 13 Head Start; TAKS testing; Benchmark testing; Open House had a good turn out with parents signing in on Smart Board.

Middle School Principal Michael Bohensky reported 213 students; the new incentive program, Pride Program involved 118 students; and another program will be selected for the next 6 weeks; students involved in sports and school events.

Harper Stewart, High School Principal, reported 198 students; Shattered Dreams event will be March 10th; One Act Play is rehearsing and will go to District March 27th; invited board members to the Top Five Banquet at Pepperbelly’s on March 29th at 6 p.m.

The Board approved New Graduation Requirements and the 2010-2011 School Calendar.

The following New Business items were approved:

a. Textbook adoption of PK-12 Reading/Literature.

b. First reading Local Policy Update 87 affecting local policies.

c. Education Service Center XV Board of Directors - members voted individually.

d. Summer Maintenance and projects.

e. Band to participate in an event Sunday, March 28th - Running for a Cure.

Superintendent Glaze listed the SSISD awards for 2010 as the following:

Outstanding Teacher: Linda Culpepper, Terri Hibler, Celia Bell, Bari McGilvray, Amy Bohensky, Tracey Thomas; Outstanding Paraprofessional: Cissy Huron, Diane Higginbotham; Outstanding Custodian: Kyle Price, Pauline Flores, Veronica Correa; Outstanding Substitute: Shirley Norris, Linda Smith, Vicki Eden; Jeff Pannell, Outstanding Supervisor; Lewis Garza, Outstanding Maintenance; Martha Flores, Outstanding Food Service; Dana Wells, Outstanding Bus Driver; Nancy Oliver, Most Dedicated Armadillo; Outstanding Volunteer, Pilar Rosales, Shelia Meador.

President Barker adjourned the meeting and announced a short break before the Executive Meeting.

During the Executive Meeting the Board regretfully accepted three resignations: Kathy Ellis, 2nd grade teacher; Brenda Roberds, High School Science; Robin Welch, Middle School & High School Math. The resignations are effective the end of the school year.
