Dear Editor,

HAPPY TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY. On March 2, 1836, Texas signed its Declaration of Independence. It was patterned after the speech delivered by Daby Crockett to the volunteers of Tennessee. The speech worked in encouraging the volunteers to come to Texas and fight for the Texans' independence.

The Declaration of Independence was signed on March 3 because General Sam Houston was celebrating his 43rd birthday on that date. General Houston was born on March 2, 1793. Joe Ragsdale was also born on March 2. I will not mention what year, but his birth knocked his parents out of going to Dallas for the Texas Centennial.

On March 6, 1836, the Alamo fell. for 13 days, 181 brave Texans had battled thousands of Santa Anna's army. Each year, on March 6, the Daughters sponsor a reenactment of the fall of the Alamo. It is held at dawn and at the Alamo. A few years after the Alamo fell, Mike Millican was born on March 6.

Happy Texas Independence Day and Happy Birthday to Joe Ragsdale and Mike Millican.

Serving God with you,

Tom Bowden
