Lady Dillo Basketball Report

The San Saba Lady Dillos went one and one in hoops play last week. We ended up District with a big win over Coleman and then lost our tie breaker game with Early. We will represent the District as the #2 seed.

When this article comes out we will have played Jim Ned in Bi-District. If we have gotten by them then we will face Nocona so hopefully we will have won and be looking at an Area round game with the Lady Indians.

Against Coleman we came out like a "house a fire" and had a terrific first quarter as we were up 15-0. We lead 21-9 at half and then finished off the Lady Katts with a 16-3 third quarter. We had a twenty point lead going into the fourth quarter and captured a big win on the road. Coleman had been playing well as of late so I was a bit nervous going over there. We had to win this one to force a playoff which was our goal going over there. By winning the Coleman game we forced a tie breaker game with Early. Each of us wanted to play because going as the #1 seed was a better draw.

We ventured over to Hamilton last Friday and probably played our worst game of the year. We just looked tight from the get go and never could find our shooting rhythm. It wasn’t really anything that Early was doing because we got good looks, the ball just wouldn’t go in the basket. It seemed like the harder we tried the worst we shot. We were 10 of 43 from the field and 1 of 20 from three point land. Despite shooting so poorly, we cut the lead to six with a little over three minutes left in the game but couldn’t overcome our poor first half. The Donahoo kid really hurt us. She played well and is a great player. Haylee Oliver lead us in scoring with 18, followed by Bianca Zepeda with 3, and Nicole Sears and Danessa Vasquez with 2 each. The girls were disappointed and so was I. Hey, I’ve been in this business long enough to know that sometimes the ball doesn’t go in the hole regardless of how hard you try. There is an old saying that mom said "there would be nights like this." We scratched and clawed and got the lead down to six which says a great deal about our girls. They fought till the end which I was proud of. I guess what hurts so much is that we were an "eyelash" away from being District Champs.

As the season started I had no idea what we would be like. I knew we were graduating a great deal and just getting into the playoffs was going to be a struggle. If you would’ve told me after the regular season that we would be 26-3, I would’ve jumped all over that.

Our girls are to be commended on a great regular season and let’s all enjoy the playoffs. Hey, it doesn’t matter what seed we are, we’ll play them one at a time. Wall wasn’t supposed to beat us last year and they did so what I’m saying is that anything can happen in a one game setting. We’ll play, hopefully we will still be playing when this article comes out.

The Little Lady Dillos won again, we downed Llano 28-21. We shot it pretty good but didn’t guard anyone the whole game. Anyways, a "good time was had by all and we ran and hollered and shot and follered once again". God Bless/MOE- Phil 4:13
